93 Reviews of Authentic Italian Tomato Sauce

From: J e l i s a

Another great recipe! As soon as I smelled this wonderful sauce I was dying to have a taste, since there was raw meat in there, I had to wait! LOL My DH was asleep and the smell woke him up LMAO I let him taste a meatball and the first thing he said was MMMM great sauce! His late grandmother was Italian and he loved her sauce, he said your's was only 2nd to hers LOL I guess this will be the sauce from now on since we don't have her recipe. BTW, I only used 2 28oz cans of puree and one 28oz can of tomatoes, that made a TON of sauce....116oz seemed like way too much, are those industrial sized cans? lol Thank you so much for posting this!

Wonderful sauce! I also added more basil and more garlic. I allowed this to just sit and not really even simmer all afternoon, it was just awesome. Although this uses canned products, it has a really fresh, light taste to it...packed with tomato flavors and I love the fresh basil. Thanks for posting!

Very Good...I followed the recipe expect for the 6 cloves, I didn't have any on had so I sprinkled a little ground cloves in the sauce instead. I also made your meatballs and cooked it in my crock pot on low for about 5 hours or so...made GREAT meatball subs.

Allie, this couldn't be any easier! And I can honestly say that this is the BEST sauce recipe I've tried. I'm abandoning my other recipe for this one. It's delicious, light-not heavy, and not too acidic. I think it's because of the absence of tomato paste, which isn't needed. The simmering time thickens it very nicely. I followed the recipe to the letter with no changes. My entire family loved it--my husband came home and was dipping bread in the pot right away. He said to tell you that your sauce and meatballs are heirloom quality recipes to pass on to the kids. He has never said that before--but he's really serious about tomato sauce and meatballs, lol. This is the best! Oh, I had the sauce (w/ the meatballs in it) going at a good bubbling simmer, and everything was ready after about 1 1/2 hours, but I let it simmer longer anyway. Thank you for sharing your recipe!

Regarding the comment about oregano .... adding oregano to red sauce is highly subjective. I live in an area w/wonderful Italian food and not everyone adds it - I happen to prefer sauce w/out oregano.

OMG - this rocked! This was my second attempt at making it - the first time, I used fresh vine ripened tomatoes instead of canned plum tomatoes and your sister kindly informed me that was why it didn't work. Luckily, the second time was a charm. Absolutely delicious - I used a bit more basil and garlic. We loved this!! Thanks so much for posting!

I always thought making a great Italian sauce would be more difficult than this, but the hardest part is actually waiting for the three hours to pass. I added your meatballs to the pot then served it all over spaghetti. Next time I may add a little more garlic, but then again, I may not mess with it at all. Thanks for sharing this one, too Allie.

Couldn't find the large cans called for, so I substituted 3-29 oz cans of puree and 1-28oz can tomatoes. I didn't know what kind of cheese to use, so I put 1/4 cup each of mozzerella and parmesean. I wasn't sure if it should simmer w/the lid on or off, so I verified with the poster that the lid should be ON. Can you tell this was my first attempt at spahgetti sauce? And, I'm happy to report it turned out fantastic! Thanks!

I didn't make it....but I TASTED IT and had to review this recipe!!! My friend made it and my dh and I were at her house and the fragrance of the sauce called out my name. She graciously gave us a sample and we can't stop talking about how amazing it tasted! I LOVE oregano, BUT I didn't even notice that it was missing...it wasn't needed. Anyone who had actually made the recipe might have know that! Thanks Allie!

This was incredibly wonderful! It reminds me of my Mom's sauce but it's made with a lot less ingredients. The only change I made was to use 3 dashes of cloves because I didn't have whole ones. I used Locatelli cheese and did make with your meatball recipe, except I fried them in the olive oil before dropping them in the sauce. An awesome eating experience for the whole family...they could not stop raving about it. Thanks!
