What a very refreshing soup! I was a bit disappointed because I was expecting spiciness but I guess my peppers just didn't pack a punch which was a bummer :o( Other than that, I really enjoyed this soup so much so that I am eating it for breakfast as I type. In this house, that is the ultimate compliment!

I started making as written, but after a taste test, the other reviewers were correct that it was lacking flavor. I added about 1 1/2 t. ground cumin and a dash of chili powder. I also added some corn. With these additions I would give it 4 stars. I took the advice of another reviewer and added the uncooked orzo directly to the soup. This recipe was originally published in Bon Appetit, March 2004.

A very tasty and hearty soup — definitely a meal in a bowl. Will definitely warm you up in cold weather — I thought it to be really darn spicy. Great combo of flavors — love the lime and cilantro in this.

This is a great soup. I made it before it was posted here. It was in the March 2004 issue of Bon Appétit.

I made this last night for a light dinner and it was wonderful! At first I thought it was too tart, but the spiciness of my serranos complemented and balanced the flavors. The only changes I made were using boneless skinless thigh meat and serrano peppers instead. Thank you for such a simple and delicious recipe!

My soup turned out much thinner than the other photos posted, but I did read in other reviews that they added more orzo and some tortilla chips. The mix of lime juice and jalapenos was very nice, but overall the soup is missing something. I used a small to medium size onion, and the onion taste is a bit overpowering for me...I may have just had a really strong onion, that happens sometimes. The fresh cilantro was great in the soup. I do recommend chopping the onion instead of slicing it to make the soup easier to eat. I made this for Everyday is a Holiday tag.

I love this soup, I used already cooked chicken slices. I didn't have any jalapenos on hand so I thru in some really hot salsa in place of that and the tomatoes. Sooo good! Went together fast!

Very good! I didn't have orzo pasta so I used small elbows instead and only about 1/2 cup because they expand. I used dark meat since I didn't have white. It was refreshing and satisfying. Thanks Mean Chef for a tasty recipe...and thanks H-Ko for adopting it.
