Made this with 3 large eggs instead of 4, 1/2 cup applesauce instead of oil, and a bit extra water and baked it about 45 minutes in a bundt pan and sprinkled it with powdered sugar. This was absolutely the best cake mix cake I've ever had! It was SO moist! Didn't even NEED frosting (and I ALWAYS need TONS of frosting on my cakes!)and was delicious without it! I will try it again with other cake and pudding flavors, and in 4 pans (like I always do my red velvet cake) with frosting. EXCELLENT!

An excellent cake mix cake and the results were superb with the perfect chocolate frosting. Very pretty cake and very moist and rich.I used cadbury top deck milk chocolate cake mix, canola oil and light sour cream as that is what I had on hand. Thanks for a great recipe.

Terrific cake Taylor! Moist and dense like you said. I made this for a cake decorating class, but I cannot wait to try it in a layer cake. I really liked how it cut so cleanly, no crumbs! Looks and tastes like it came from a bakery. I agree with you about not adding the chocolate chips. I will definately be using this recipe often. Thanks for sharing! Update: I was so impressed with the texture of this cake (I'm into cake decorating) that I have used this formula with other flavors of cake. I made this with a cherry chip cake mix using cheesecake flavored pudding mix, it was awesome. It cuts perfectly and the layers are sturdy enough to divide into more layers, and stay together well while handling for stacking. I'm loving this recipe!

This cake is the BEST cake I have ever made! I made it for my mother-in-law's 50th birthday. She's a huge choc-aholic and in general doesn't like home-made cakes (even box!) She LOVED it and has asked me to make it for her again! I didn't use the perfect chocolate frosting, but I will next time.

I used a Duncan Hines devils food cake mix and it turned out very moist and delicious. Will definitely make this again.

This cake was very easy to make and the end results were wonderful. The cake was very moist. Thank you for a great cake recipe starting from a mix.

This cake was divine I made this along with the White Chocolate Fudge for my sisters baby shower. Nobody even could tell it was boxed cake, I even told them on purpose! Not only was it moist but it was very easy...the only substitution I made was I traded the oil for applesauce (exact measurements). Thanks!

Great cake - thank you! I think its the addition of the sour cream that makes the difference because I have made other "box" cakes that call for pudding mix and the texture & taste of this recipe is superior. Also, I had no sour cream so I used 1 cup plain yogurt + 1 tablespoon of cornstarch and it turned out perfect. I can't wait to try it again with the sour cream EDIT: I just made this again but this time I used a lemon cake mix + sugar free Jello white chocolate pudding mix + 1 cup plain yogurt + 1 tablespoon of corn starch. This is THE most delicious cake I have ever tasted and the texture is fantastic, smooth, and moist. I frosted it with a simple home made buttercream in which I added half a pack of pink lemonade Kool-Aid (powder) for that oh so lemony flavor.

I must say that this was the best chocolate cake I've ever had ! Very smooth, rich and a breeze to make but I definitely required a quart of milk with my large piece !! A must try for all who love chocolate. Also.... I used Betty Crocker Butter Chocolate cake mix. In my opinion BC butter cake mixes are the best boxed cake mixes. Thanks Taylortwo !!!
