This is one of those recipes that I really find exciting! Probably because I start out feeling skeptical about making it... I don't know what I was expecting, maybe that it would taste like meatballs or an Italian meatloaf or something. Plus I was using all beef. Well I'll be a Greek chef if it didn't start smelling EXACTLY like gyros as it broiled away in the oven! I could hardly wait to slice them up! I made them precisely as stated in the recipe, but I did broil them longer as my patties were thicker.I also flipped them halfway through so that both sides would brown nicely. Shaye, I can't tell you how much we enjoyed these with homemade Tzatziki, thinly sliced tomatoes, and crumbled Feta cheese on warmed pita bread. I'll be making these VERY often, and next time will probably try the 1/2 beef 1/2 lamb combination for even more authentic Greek flavor. Thank you so much for a fabulous dinner last evening that is still being talked about today!

I've made a recipe similar using 3/4 ground beef and 1/4 ground pork. I also add 2 TBSP finely chopped fresh basil. I roll into the center of each "burger" sliced feta cheese and broil or fry on a grill pan. The added flavor of basil and feta is really yummy!

This will be my 3rd time making this recipe. Sometimes I use 1/2 lamb & 1/2 beef, other times I use all lean beef, either way it's great. I actually use a meatloaf pan and let the fat drain down, when it is finished, I just thinly slice the meat off the top of the loaf. It is so easy that way. My family loves it. My husband use to live in Greece and is very picky with his Greek food. He loves it. Thank you.

I too was skeptical about how authentic this would taste. Gyros are by far one of my most favorite things to eat, and until now I was spending way too much money at an authentic family owned Greek Restaurant called King Davids. They have the best gyros ever. This gyro meat is almost exactly like it. it's sooo tender and flavorful. I loved it. I mixed it by hand for a long time to ensure it would be tender, and instead of broiling it, I baked it at 300 for about 6 minutes each side. This really makes it tender. I sliced it really thin and put it in warmed pocketless pitas with lettuce, chopped tomatoes, and tzatziki sauce, I make myself. Thank you so much!

I am amazed. I have never really considered it to be possible to make anything like a gyro at home. I gave it a try and WOW. Family and I had a great meal. I did used all beef and reduced the pepper to 1/2 teaspoon as suggested in recipe. I broiled the meat patties, and flipped them over half way through. I let them set a bit, then sliced them. They didn't crumble. We put it on pita bread with onions and tomatoes, feta cheese and (sigh) romaine lettuce, which I am not sure is authentic, but I am a lettuce nut. And we made Tzatziki sauce rz# 64146 (yummy). The first bite was such an adventure! It was truly a gyro! We also made Greek Lemon Rice (another first for us) rz#139661. The rice was very good and an excellent accompanyment. Thanks Shaye for sharing the recipe!!!

I have not had a decent gyro since I was in Greece 10 years ago!! This meat is the closest I have had to buying a gyro in the market place in Rhodes! I used 3/4 lb lamb and 1/4 ground chuck. Everything else was the same. I made 3 thick patties out of it and cooked it in a 500 degree oven with the pitas I was making. It worked out really well. It even reheated well in the microwave for lunch the next day. Wonderful!!

This is delicious, very simple to prepare, and tasted just like real gyro meat you can buy at a gyro stand. I the used ground lamb and the full amount of garlic & pepper and found it to be perfectly seasoned. Thanks for this quick & tasty recipe.

I was surprised how much this tasted like 'real' gyros that you buy — only without the scary mystery meat feeling that I sometimes get with eating them out! It was really good. I used ground pork and made TZATZIKI cucumber dipping sauce (#83189). Thank you Shaye for this recipe!

This tastes and smells just like gyros and along with some tzazitki sauce(sp?) they were just yum. who knew gyros were so easy to make. The only change i would make, if any, would be to pan fry teh patties instead of broiling. I thought the broiling made them a bit dryish but very tasty nonetheless. Thanks so much for sharing, Shaye. PS: I used ground lamb to make these.
