Uncle Bill.....all I can say is where are those 10 stars? This was my first attempt at pea soup using a hambone (which I would always throw out - insert embarrassed face). I followed the recipe precisely and did not find the 12 cups of water to much....it was perfect. I pureed just for a second because I wanted to keep some of the vegetable bits in the soup. Thank you for sharing this recipe and I hope you like the pictures. : )

This is such an easy recipe for cold weather that doesnt have tomatoes unlike most cold weather soups. But I agree with the other reviewer that 12 cups of water was way too much water. 8-10 cups is better. Thanks for sharing Uncle Bill !

Excellent! We have very few chilly, wet and cloudy days days in Phoenix but today was perfect for a pot of split pea soup. I made a double batch so I would have some to freeze. I'm glad I did, the 2 of us have demolished half of a single recipe. I made the recipe as directed but had to cook the soup an extra hour to get it down to the right thickness. Next time I would reduce the amount of water to 10 cups for a single recipe. Thanks Uncle Bill for this delicious, warm your heart soup.

This is a great recipie. I can't imagine using 12 cups of liquid though. I only used 8 cups and it's still a little to watery for my liking. I agree with those who suggested using two bags of beans. I intend to add a second bag of beans to this batch then i'm sure it will be perfect. I used a ham bone but it was pretty clean so I cut up part of a ham steak as well. I also added garlic to this and only used chicken stock for the liquid. It's a great recipie. Perfect amount of veggies and seasoning. Thanks so much. I have to say this gets better each day. We had leftovers for lunch and my 3 year old asked for seconds. I changed my vote from 4 to 5 and i'd go higher if I could.

Delicious and easy to make. I let the soup sit one day before serving it; the soup thickened up nicely and was enjoyed by all

This is the best split pea soup I've ever made or eaten. I only had 1 1/2 C. of dried split peas so I added 1/2 C. lentils and that made a fine addition. I used 10 cups of water and it was quite soupy so I left the lid off the pot and it thickened up very nicely towards the end of the 1 1/2 hours cook time. I'll certainly be making this again, thanks so much for posting this recipe Uncle Bill!

Been meaning to review this since Christmas! I also used a lesser amount of water- had a lovely bone from a spiral cut ham and added cubes of the ham- no need to pureé. It was just delicious- thanks so much for this one Uncle Bill.

Uncle Bill we loved this. It's getting cooler is Qld, Aust now and this was perfect. I grated my carrot and used bacon hocks which my butcher cut up into smaller pieces for me. I also used the full 12 cups of water and I'm glad I did. It ended up simmering on the stove all afternoon which meant that I didn't need to puree as the split peas and veggies were so very soft - yum. I took the lid off and turned it up slightly higher allowing the soup to reduce down. Both my 2 and 4 year olds loved this. Served with Kittencals Delicious Cheesy Parmesan Garlic Bread Kittencal's Parmesan Garlic Bread or Garlic Toast. Thanks for sharing a wonderful recipe

Boy, did I ever get rave reviews when I made this soup! I made this up and gave some to a friend, plus some to my MIL, and all called to tell me how good it was. The changes I made were minor: used 2 bay leaves instead of 1, used 1/4 tsp of thyme instead of a pinch plus added 1/4 tsp dried savory. Other than that, I followed this as written. It was so easy to make and the taste was just so, so delicious. I froze some too, which worked well. Thanks so much for sharing!

Just changed to 5 stars--this was even better cooled down a bit. Don't eat it really hot. Good, healthy, long, but easy to make. A winner. My French husband said it was better than his mother's.
