112 Reviews of Kittencal's Taco Seasoning Mix

From: Bridget Leigh

On Sep 3, 2007

I have used this for a while, but I thought I should finally review it. This is very close to store-bought taco seasoning, with one big difference: I can easily adjust the spice level to meet my needs for that meal. I usually make up a double batch and add about 1 T of corn starch right to the seasoning mix. This helps thicken it just a bit when I cook my taco meat. :o) Thanks, Kittencal!

Perfect blend of flavor! I think this tasted better than the store-bought kind, because I was able to make it less salty. I omitted the onion powder but otherwise followed the recipe to a tee. I put it right into some ground turkey that I was browning. After the turkey was brown, I lowered the heat and let it simmer for 5 minutes to absorb all the flavor. That's when DH started asking what was for dinner and what smelled so good. Then we put the meat onto nachos and the flavor was perfection! Thanks for a keeper.

I made this mix, doubled except for the salt, to use in another Zarr recipe, and I used cayenne pepper. It was too hot for my children, and my husband and I were only able to eat a little before our mouths became just too hot to finish. We normally enjoy some heat but this really overwhelmed the other flavors and I was disappointed to have to fix something different for the kids. Will try again with much less cayenne & half the salt - and at least I know now how much (or little) heat my family can handle in a recipe

Kittencal does it again! I've been looking for a recipe to replace the store bought stuff so I could omit cumin...this is it! Just the right amount of spice, even without the cayenne. I added about 1/3 a cup of water to the mix and let it simmer..didn't even need the flour! Thanks again!

Very good! I knew there had to be a recipe out there for taco seasoning that was tasty. I used the Pace brand packets for years and, for whatever reason, I haven't been able to find them anywhere in my county for months. I have been unable to find another brand that tasted good and didn't have weird, unpronounceable ingredients, and since tacos have been a favorite meal at our house, I was very disappointed! I am so glad you posted this recipe. I only use 1 tablespoon chili powder - I get mine from the health food store and it's quite potent (especially for my younger children). And I use an 8 ounce can of tomato sauce with a little water added to ground turkey meat. Excellent!

I ran out of Penzey's taco Seasoning and needed a recipe ASAP. I agreed to make lunch for my husband and his hunting buddies. I had all of the ingredients on hand to whip up this seasoning mix. I added 1 TBSP of corn starch and use a 1 pint jar of my own freshed canned tomato juice along with 1 pound of browned, lean ground hamburger (or chicken broth/stock for chicken. )This tasted so fresh and flavorful! I made chicken and beef and there was not one scrap left! I have since made this several time (tonight included). I just throw everything into the crock pot. It's a fast and delicious meal. This recipe doesn't specify how many TBSP of mix per 1 pound of meat. I made on recipe's worth per 1 pound of meat.

LOVED this!!!!!! I'm so glad to be able to make my own seasoning now, instead of buying those expensive BLAND little packets! What a waste! THIS was AWESOME!! I made mexican-style pork chops with it! I used it like a dry rub and it worked extremely well!! Can't wait to use it for tacos or burritos next!! Or maybe a mexican lasagna...hmmm...the possibilities are endless!!! Thanks Kittencal!!

My family loves tacos and they loved this recipe! The only thing I did different was I added 1/2 tsp. corn starch and used 3/4 cup water instead of tomato sauce. Would be great in taco soup. So easy, loved it!

Great taco seasoning, I really like this even better than the stuff you buy at the store, this tastes much fresher and better. I used this for KITTENCAL's Taco salad Kittencal's Taco Salad for a Crowd, and it was really good! thank you.
