Paula Dean calls this one "Not Yo' Momma's Banana Pudding" and I have been making it for years; ever since the first time I saw her do this one on her show. Make no mistake.... if you take this pudding anywhere you will be hounded for the recipe! The only changes I make now, after having done this recipe so many times, is to crush the 2nd bag of Chessmen into shortbread crumbs to top the pudding; and I also make it a point to refrigerate overnight, as the cookies on the bottom need time to soften. It is even better the second day, if there is any left!!! (That's pretty rare....)You will be the star of any potluck or family dinner if you bring this one--try it and see!

Whole family loves this pudding. We definitely prefer Chessman cookies over the typical Nilla Wafers! I've even made just the pudding part and substituted a banana cream instant pudding for the vanilla and then served in it parfait glasses with a Chessman cookie stuck in the top. Looked great and still had the banana taste without the bananas (I happened to be out out the time) It was great. This stuff disappears fast. Chessman cookies don't get as mushy as Vanilla wafers do. This is a family favorite.

This is wonderful! It's also in Paula Deen's latest cookbook and she calls it: "Not Your Mama's Banana Pudding". I made it today for some pilots and the CEO at our municipal airport and I heard nothing but raves. One pilot who's wife's a professional chef didn't want to try it because he said he only eats his wife's food, was persuaded to at least taste it...he ate 2 bowls and proclaimed it the best he'd ever had. I used half and half in place of the milk and added 1/4 tsp. of almond extract to it.

The best banana pudding I have ever tasted. I love the Chessman cookies! This recipe is definitely a keeper.

Very nice taste. So that it would not be overly sweet, I made my own whipped cream and did not add sugar (but I did throw in a little frangelica). If this is your first time making banana pudding, make sure you use very ripe bananas. Mine were underripe and the tastes didn't blend as well as I would have liked. Also, let it sit for a while so that the cookies get soft. I used Nilla Wafers and the pudding tasted much better the next day. Thanks! Will make again!!

Outstanding.... 10 stars if I could give that rating. I saw it on Paula"s show and have made it several times on special occasions. A big hit at our house. Going to use pistachio pudding for Christmas.

This is the exsact recipe my friend made at work. and my husband lost!!! So i came on here knowing only the basics that it called for. THIS IS THE BEST BANANA PUDDING EVER! the only thing i did diffrently is i added a tsp of vanilla to reg. vanilla pudding and i used coconut bars instead of shortbread cookies.

This pudding is sinful! I could not stop eating it. Everyone wanted the recipe. I used regular vanilla wafers on the bottom. On top, instead of adding more cookies, I sprinkled on Heath milk chocolate toffee bits. SO YUMMY! I make this again and again.

This is very rich but so good. Every time I make this dessert everyone at home and at work goes wild! I have never meet anyone who does not like this banana pudding. I use sweetened whipped cream(if you are going to all this trouble, use the best). Also refrigerate until ice cold - I think it's better this way.

This was absolutely INCREDIBLE! I wasn't sure I'd be crazy about it, because a) I've sort of lost my taste for instant pudding and b) I'm not really a big cream cheese fan. However, this is definitely the easiest, tastiest dessert I've tried in quite a while! I used one package of regular Chessman cookies and one of chocolate Chessman cookies and alternated them, which I would highly recommend. I also used banana cream pudding in place of french vanilla (which I couldn't find in the store) and it was fabulous. I brought this dessert to a class pot luck, and everyone loved it. Perfect for a warm spring night! Thanks so much for sharing this Paula Deen classic; I'll be making it again!
