My dishwasher looked so bright and smelt fresh after trying this recipe out. I jut put the bleach and vinegar in a glass pyrex bowl and ran the dishwasher empty. Will do this once a year to keep the dishwasher looking good.

Missouri limestone is something that gets things dirty looking in a hurry. All the limestone just sets and looks awful. Its hard to remove because limestone rocks become soft after its been in water for a while. This worked perfectly. Sure beat getting in the dishwasher and a workout while scrubbing the dishwasher clean. I told my DH that it was almost easier to just wash them by hand... well not any more. Thanks!

Dishwasher is nice and clean. But with this Iowa hard water the cloudiness on my glass plates has been etched into them and sad to say this did not help get that off.
Thanks Bev, we tried. UPDATE 6-9-04 : I talked to my water system man and he said to use Palmolive liquid dishwasher soap. He also told me that high phosphorus in the soap causes the etch/cloudiness of your clear dishes. Palmolive has the lowest at 1.6% phosphorus.

I read about a dishwasher detergent substitute that is similiar to steps 13 & 14, except they recommended using more baking powder for hard water, as much as equal amounts of borax and baking soday. Since our water is very hard, I used the equal amounts and still had a film. So I mixed half of the substitute mix with an equal amount of powdered dishwashing soap and no more film. It's still cheaper than using all commercial soap. End recipe for our hard water: 1 part borax 1 part backing soda 2 parts powdered dishwashing soap

This worked wonders on my dingy dishwasher. This is definitely a keeper recipe that I will be using again and again! Thanks for posting, Tish!

Yes this works and my dishwasher is clean and fresh again. Like with Bev's recipe for the washing machine, I will use this method twice a year!

I have been using just vinegar to clean my dishwasher, but this worked even better! Every so often I have problems with spotty silverware and glasses and this helped to eliminate that problem. I'll be sure to keep this tip handy. Thanks, Tish!
