You have no idea how thrilled I was to find this recipe... I'd given up on making soda bread for an Irish dinner last week. (Nearly impossible in an electric oven.) These scones are so similar in texture to soda bread; nice little crunch on the outside, soft and moist on the inside. Turned out great in the electric oven! I couldn't find currants, so I used Craisins and chopped-up apricots. The scones are superb with a little orange marmalade & a big glass of milk.
Thanks SO much for posting this, tappies!

These are delicious. I took them to my monthly women's missionary meetings and they were devoured! I got tons of compliments....couldn't even take any pictures...they're gone!!!

Oh my, these are so wonderful! I cannot believe I made them ... me who screws up boxed cake mixes. It took 2 tries as I got creative w/buttermilk the 1st time & then overcooked them in my convection oven. They were awful, but my hubby loved them anyway & asked me to get it right. They are beyond heavenly the 2nd time. I just ate 1 still warm from the oven & can't wait till he gets home from work. He'll be so impressed. YUM!

Thought I'd stuffed this up...had a kid attached to my legs during the prep which meant a rushed job...my dough wasn't terribly sticky so I thought 'here we go'. I have to admit that they didn't look fantastic (my fault, not the recipes) but they certainly TASTED fantastic despite a stressful morning in the kitchen and were happily and quickly devoured by supposed 'scone connoisseurs'! If I couldn't stuff this up (despite obvious attempts) anyone can make these.

Outstanding recipe. Flavor was perfect and the consistency of the finished scone was just right. I'm going to mix it up by trying various dried fruits in it. Thanks for posting!

I added only 4 tbsp of sugar (vs. the 6) and added 1/2 C cinnamon chips and currants. To make them more dessert-y, I also added a small amount of sanding sugar to the top before baking. These scones smelled amazing in the oven — made our whole house smell like the donut shop I used to work at many moons ago. Will definitely make these again! I already packed a goodie bag up for my co-workers. Thank you!!

We accidentally added the egg to the recipe, and (on purpose) also added some frozen strawberries and raspberries. It turned out beautifully - tasty and nice texture, like a cross between a pancake and a cookie.
