This is a very hearty, thick, comforting soup. I used ham hocks and I think sauteing them was the key to more flavor here. We liked the addition of tomatoes too. Nicely seasoned, and very easy to make. I was very happy with the way this turned out. Very good!!

I love this recipe! However, I would like to point out that it tastes wonderful (and is better for you; no saturated fats) by taking out the meat, and highly recommend it. The flavoring packet is perfectly fine to use and for those of us who are Vegetarians, it is Vegan friendly. It tastes as if you are eating meat...what gives it the best flavor is NOT the meat, but the wonderful vegetables, tomatoes, beans, onions and seasonings. Many of the reviewers are attributing it's wonderful flavor to the meat, but had they tried it without, they would know they're giving credit to the wrong source.
For the renaissance festival, I buy a round sourdough bread, take a knife, and cut a circle around the bottom to scoop out the innards and form a bowl, into which the bean soup is poured into. Then I top it off with chives and cheddar cheese.
My family has asked to eat it again and again, and the leftovers are always gone the next day.

This recipe is a family favorite!!! Our favorite version substitutes smoked kielbasa for the hamhocks. This gives it a good smoky flavor, as well as easy to eat, individual bites of meat.

This was really a good hearty soup. I soaked my beans overnight so I did not boil them for an hour first. I wanted to make it vegetarian so I left out the hamhock and put in vegetable bouillon. I also cooked it about 3 hours. YUM

This is a great soup. Only, watch out for the flavor packet that it comes with. It contains MSG, under the name of hydrolyzed soy protein (anything hydrolyzed or autolyzed contains free glutamate). It is a great soup without the flavor packet. Yum!

I loved it! Although I used hamshanks instead as there is more meat on the bones.... a good suggestion from my butcher...

Wonderful soup recipe! Instead of using ham hocks, I used a package of diced ham and added 1/2 lb of smoked sausage. Served with rice and cornbread, this made a delicious meal.

This recipe saved my pot of soup. I followed the recipe on the package of beans which was a pot of soup with beans and NO flavor. All the spices really helped save my soup. Thanks!

My husband told me he didn't like Bean soup... but it is such an economical meal I decided to try it. Two days later he was asking when I was going to make this soup again. Fortunately, we had two more meals of it in the freezer. 3 dinners for us for about $6, not bad and yummy too!

This is a good flavorful soup. I think it tasted better the second day. I added some white wine about thirty minutes before serving on the advice of my husband. Although that made a good flavor combination, the wine needed more time to meld.
