This is NOT the original Waldorf salad, no matter what the newspaper may have told you. A Waldorf salad, according to the Waldof-Astoria's own culinary director, has NEVER had banana or miniature marshmallows in it. I suspect that was a Southern addition. The remainder of the ingredients is accurate.

I made this salad for the Pick Your Chef cook-a-thon. I omitted the celery and red grapes, due to personal preference, otherwise, followed the directions as given. It's very easy to assemble, and the taste is lovely. We enjoyed it with your German Spareribs and Kraut recipe. Thanks for sharing this tasty dish. Laudee

Neither commentator here is correct. The original recipe had only apples, celelry, lemon juice and mayonaise. See the history below: Waldorf salad [WAWL-dorf] Created at New York's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in the 1896 not by a chef but by the maître d'hôtel Oscar Tschirky, the Waldorf salad was an instant success.the original version of this salad contained only apples, celery and mayonnaise. Chopped walnuts later became an integral part of the dish. Waldorf salad is usually served on top of a bed of lettuce.

This was the salad I made for Thanksgiving this year. I prepared it the day before and it turned out extremely well and was very much enjoyed by all. I'm sure I'll be making it again and again. Got lots of compliments. Thanks for sharing!

Delicious! Delighted to have found the exact recipe that my mother in law used every holiday. She has been gone for many years and this recipe brought back many happy memories for my husband. Thank you so much for making our holiday celebrations even more joyful!

It really doesn't matter whether this is the original recipe or not, this is the best waldorf salad I have ever made. Everyone loved it! Other than omiting the banannas I followed the recipe exactly.

Your salad recipe was a big hit, although my husband has asked me to leave out the marshmallows next time!
