This is the BEST frosting! I use butter instead of margarine (with any recipe I do that) and the recipe may sound a bit odd, but it is absolutely worth it and doesn't taste odd at all! It is especially good with rich, dark chocolate cake. It is a bit more work than traditional home-made frostings but everyone loves it the best! Tasting is believing

I decided to edit my review. We made this frosting when I was a child and I always liked it because it wasn't so cloyingly sweet. And this is the frosting I used on the cake that won me first prize at the county fair when I was about 13!

I've tried a number of recipes from this site, but this is the first time that I've felt compelled to write a review. I LOVED this frosting. I tried a Wacky Cake recipe and thought that it might need something on top. This recipe is great because there is no need for powdered sugar, and the frosting has just the right amount of sweetness. I halved the recipe and used butter instead of margarine, and the frosting came out so perfectly light and fluffy, and was so easy to spread. I didn't like the way the Wacky Cake tasted, but this frosting made up for it. Thanks so much for sharing this recipe! I will definitely be using it again and again.

Excellent frosting. I microwaved the milk and the flour to thicken it and it turned out beautiful. This is definately my favorite frosting. Thanks Leta.I will be making this often.

This is the frosting that has been traditionally paired with red velvet cake at our house. It's always been a favorite, but I never think to use it on anything else but a red cake! Definitly, use butter with the shortening, you'll get a whiter frosting (nicer contrast with red!) or we often make it with all white shortening (1 cup total fat) and no butter at all! This is also a great filling, and traditional, for whoopie pies. Thanks for posting this old favorite!

I loved this frosting...kinda got scared when we just tasted it out of the bowl, but when we put it on The White Wedding Cake by Mom of Five (White Wedding Cake) it was AWESOME! So light and fluffy, NOT too sweet...just right!!! Will definately make this one again!!! Thank you, Leta, for posting this one!!!

I needed a recipe that didn't use powdered sugar and this fit the bill and then some! Fluffy and not too sweet. I will defintely use this often. I would even try adding cocoa to it for a chocolate frosting. Thanks!

This was very easy and very good! I frosted Dark Chocolate Cake with it and it was sooooo good - it does melt easily though ( probably coz I just couldn't wait to eat the cake and just had to put it on!) Family just loved it and put all the left overs on the cake as well(although I put tons on!)Not too sweet and just right!

Very smooth and airy, nothing like the confectioner's frosting I'm used to. I cooked the flour and milk until they were very thick, almost gummy, and the frosting has not separated at all.
