Last winter, I made oatmeal in the crockpot just about every week. I like to substitute apple juice for the water and I sometimes add dried cranberries as well as the cinnamon. Delicious! Even my daughter (now 23 mos) loves this nice hot (and healthy!) breakfast.

Nice to wake up and switch on the coffee pot and have nice hot oatmeal already ready to eat. This recipe is great. It is easy to prepare, inexpensive, and healthy. I like my oatmeal with rasins or sometimes I will slice a bananna, add some chopped walnuts, and brown sugar. The dried cranberries, I will be trying next time. I have heard of people making bread pudding with leftover oatmeal too.

What a wonderful way to wake up to a no-fuss breakfast! This oatmeal is very creamy and really satisfying. I used 2 cups skim milk and 3 cups of water and added some oat bran and wheat germ. Cutting down the liquid and adding those two things gave it the perfect texture in our opinion. It is missing the somewhat chewy texture you get from the standard oatmeal preparation, but we certainly didn't miss it. For spices, I added a pinch of salt, freshly grated nutmeg, cinnamon and I added a few teaspoons of smart balance spread. To serve, we topped with sugar free maple syrup and splenda. A few mornings a week my dh has to be at work at the crack of dawn and this breakfast is a lifesaver for us both. The leftovers taste just as good and reheat well. For easier crockpot clean up, just spray with nonstick spray before adding the ingredients. Thanks for a great recipe that we have already made twice this week.

I've been doing this for some time. Use the "steel-cut" oats (also known as Scotch oats and Irish oatmeal)as they have twice the fiber as the quick kind, plus they're chewier and have a more nutty favor. They also contain beta-glucans, a soluble fiber that absorbs cholesterol from the blood. The tradeoff is they take longer to cook, but with the crockpot, your breakfast is ready as you rise to the shine of the morning sun
Make this even more special by adding things such as dried peaches, prunes, raisins, walnuts and even dried cranberries. Also remember, cinammon is great for you diabetics; and some nutmeg is nice. Some of those are a must in our home.

This was soooooo good! I started it around 1 pm and when I got home from XC practice at 8:30 I was a little chilly and this warmed me right up. When I put in the oats and water I added some cinnamon and nutmeg and when it was done cooking I ate it with raisins, brown sugar, and some milk. Tomorrow morning I'll try it with chopped dried pineapples and some sugar...I'm excited already! I'm not sure if I was supposed to, but every couple of hours I stirred it. It turned out great, so that couldn't have been too much of a mistake.
Thanks so much for the delicious recipe!

I've been doing this for years! My children and I love it. The only things I do differnetly is to spray my crockpot with vegetable cooking spray for an easy clean-up, add a PINCH of salt to slow down the cooking of the oats (so they don't turn too,too creamy. personal prefference) and I mix in the cinnamon when I get up in the morning. Also,my children really like when I add 1 cup of apple sauce and 1 cup of brown sugar with the cinnamon and serve it with a good helping of cream in their bowls.(so do I!)This is a "winner" recipe in our house! OH!, If you think it is too mushy try reducing the water to 4 cups and add 2 cups of ice to the VERY cold water. I've done this and it does work for me.

I've tried this recipe with both 3 minute and regular oatmeal, and have been very happy with the results. I've got a tiny 1 qt slowcooker that makes half the recipe perfectly and it's wonderful to get up first thing in the morning and have your porridge ready. I like to toss in a handful or so of chopped dried fruit (I like a mix) and it's great!

Yup, this was as easy as she said. I added dates to mine, about 3/4 C. Tasted yummy and extremely creamy. I do think though that it was probably done at least 2 hours sooner than the recipe suggested. Got leftovers in the fridge for tomorrow.

I like the overall concept but next time I will only use 4 cups of water, so that it has a thicker consistency.

This is such a basic recipe and concept but i would have never thought of it! It can be so versitale, i've already made it a few times and making another one 2nite. I put in whatever sounds good, i'm thinking of putting in dried peaches, almond extract and cinnamon in 2nite. Also when i serve it i have to add alittle brown sugar 2 it just 2 sweeten it up (my own prefrence). Great recipe and soooo simple!!! It cuts down on my time in making breakfast in the morning b4 going off 2 school!
