This is the recipe my Mother use to make and I had lost it. It is great. Takes a little time and patience but is certainly worth it. I doubled the custard part of the recipe for my family to really cover the wafers and bananas good and had little left over for my sister who doesn't like the bananas and wafers. Really enjoyed this one.

Very good! I made 2 double batches for a huge BBQ party and everyone loved it. The only thing I would change might be to set out a box of wafers to garnish with, for those who like the crunchy in their pudding. Other than that I wouldn't change a thing. Some people told me it tasted just like their Mother's or Grandmother's, very nice recipe.

Excellent recipe. We have been on a low carb diet, so we have not been using sugar; consequently, it tastes very sweet. Since our three teenage grandsons are coming tomorrow, I need treats that will fill them up. This will be perfect. Next time I will probably use 1 cup instead of 1 1/3 cups of sugar. I love the thickness (or thinness, if you will) because I do not like a thick banana pudding. By the time the bananas and wafers are added, it will be the perfect consistency. One thing you may not have tried is to cook your cream fillings in the microwave. I've been doing that successfully for a number of years. I microwave the milk and dry ingredients on high, wisking at intervals, until it begins to thicken. Then I ladle the hot liquid into the beaten egg yolks as I wisk them. I pour the mixture through a sieve back into the big bowl, wisking more, and microwave until it is thick. Sometimes the pudding appears to almost become cake around the edges, but you can wisk and it will revert to nice, thick and smooth pudding. I will submit a great old fashioned chocolate cream pie recipe that I cook that way. It's perfect every time — and no standing and stirring!

This is just like the recipe that my mom made when I was a child, and it is delicious. There is no comparison between this and the boxed pudding recipe. This is FAR superior. The only note I would make is that it only took 5 minutes for my meringue to brown, so watch the oven closely, don't walk away.

This is the real deal. I love home made pudding. Except for a little more stirring time, it's really not more difficult than making the pudding mix, but sooo much better. I've used the same recipe before - found mine in Southern Living magazine. It's a classic - and a keeper!

Wonderful! I'm a westerner & had the guts to make this for a room full of southerners, and I received much applause. This is the real deal.

This was very good. I did add 1/4 cup butter to the custard as I was cooking it. I also cooked the custard in the microwave on high for 3 minutes at a time, stirring after each 3 minutes, until it was thickened. You don't have to stir constantly that way. Tasted just like mom's! Thanks.

This was quick and easy and it didn't take much more effort than the prepackage pudding and cool whip. My family enjoyed it tremedously. Thanks for the great recipe Lisa.
