Once you try this, you'll never make another chocolate cake. Rich chocolate flavor, moist, easy, absolutely perfect! There's a lot of cocoa and you can really taste it, so I'd use a good brand. Mine was done at 32 minutes. The only thing that can improve this recipe is Mean Chef's Chocolate Frosting #31809, the most amazing frosting in the world! Thanks, Mean Chef, for a superb recipe!

When I asked DH what he would like for desert for Thanksgiving, he told me that if he could have anything he wanted it would be a sour-milk chocolate cake like his mother used to make. After 36 years of marriage, this is the first time he has ever mentioned his mother's cake. This recipe was in answer to a request I posted. The cake was so very easy to make that I was surprised by the result. A lovely dark chocolate color with a very tender, very light and very moist texture. DH's Review: "I feel like a kid again and I feel 10 pounds heavier", this coming after eating 1/2 the cake in 24 hours. Thanks Mean Chef for giving DH a very special holiday gift.

Perfect-lusciously moist. I used a 13X9 pan and baked it about 50 minutes.

My daughter who is such a food snob actually said that this cake is excellent, and it really is. As good as this cake was the day it was made, it is a lot better the day after, cold, out of the fridge. This cake with Mean Chef's chocolate frosting #31809 is now our home's number 1 cake combo. Don't fiddle with the recipe, just make it 1 day before you want to eat it. Thank you so much for this one.

Absolutely scrumptous! I was going to make a box cake for my son's birthday party, simply because wanted to be sure it would turn out and be easy to work with. However, when I saw the rave reviews for this recipe, I thought I'd give it a try. Wow! It was so moist and yummy. Just the right texture and flavor. A friend of mine, who makes cakes for weddings, said it was a winner. Will definitely be making this one again. Oh, and you HAVE to make this with Chocolate Frosting #31809, also submitted by Mean Chef. Simply divine ....

With all of the wonderful reviews, this recipe certainly doesnt need another 5 stars, but I want to give my 2 cents :D I made this cake recipe for my hubby's bday and everyone LOVED it. Hubby loves cake covered in ice cream, so I softened some rich chocolate ice cream, and spread it over the cake like icing, and then let it sit in the freezer long enough to let the ice cream harden just a bit, and then served. I threw some fresh raspberries around it and drizzled chocolate sauce over the top. FABULOUS cake
Thanks!!

This cake was really good. I was out of few things and had to improvise. One substitution was 1/2 c vanilla yogurt and 1/2 c milk for buttermilk. I didn't have cocoa powder either so I used 4 ounces of baker's chocolate. I used 2 tsps of Kahula instead of vanilla. It looked sort of strange in the wet form but it baked up nicely. I'll definitely do this again. I used a chocolate cream cheese icing.

Another great recipe. No wonder your name is Mean Chef. One of my best friends helped me bake this and she was a bit hesitant because it was a fairly runny batter. But they baked up beautifully. They were a nice, dark brown, and had a deep chocolate flavor. I made it for my little cousin's birthday party and everyone loved it. I was a little short on time, so I used the frosting idea from Chocolate Cherry Cake with Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting. I'm so glad I had to level the cakes, otherwise I wouldn't have had any to snack on! Awesome, simple, delicious recipe!

I made this recipe in only one bowl by mixing all of the wet ingredients & sugar; then adding the salt & baking soda; mixing; and lastly the flour (mixing just until combined). This was really delicious, and couldn't be simpler. I used extra dark cocoa powder, which I recommend. Made cupcakes and topped them with Caramel Frosting #44051.
