This is exactly how my Mum taught me to make fruit salad......obviously from her South African days! I sometimes add lime or lemon juice to the liquid base as well. Mum, Dad, Malcolm and I enjoyed this today, after out main luncheon.....with light creme fraiche - just wonderful. I used: papaya, pawpaw, guava, pineapple, banana, lychees, kiwi, apricots, peaches, passion fruit pulp and melon. NOT all of it was fresh fruit, some was tinned and some was frozen - but as a combination it all worked very well. I subbed the sugar with local French wildflower honey and DID add the vanilla, as well as a few cardamom seeds.....for a lift in the flavours. This made enough for 4 people with second helpings....so, it would work for 6 to 8 people. Made for ZWT4 and the Dessert Challenge - another fine recipe from the Eastern Cape - thanks Zuri! FT

This is a wonderful base for a fruit salad. We used cantaloupe, watermelon, bananas, apricots, kiwi fruit, pineapple, strawberries, green grapes. My DD accidentally threw out the juice off the apricots so I used a cup of tamarind juice left over from last nights fruit salad recipe. I put the vanilla in but no sugar. It was not necessary. Made for ZWT4.

Oh, yes, this is a beautiful and bountiful dessert/salad! I have been making this type of dessert for my sister's b'day for years! I usually serve this over slices of pound cake with vanilla yogurt on top. For this recipe I used papaya, watermelon, canned lychees, fresh pitted cherries, kiwi fruit, mango, red and green grapes, purple plums and banana sliced just before serving. I cut up all the fruit over the bowl to catch all the juices. I let this sit out to blend all the flavors and then chilled. This is always sweet enough for us, so no sweetner is used. Thnx for posting, Zurie. Made for ZWT4.

This was a great tropical fruit salad! it used a lot of fruits that i don't usually eat which was a very nice change! i definitely added the Cointreau to the salad and i have to say it should be required in the ingredients because it blended SO well! i used kiwis, papaya, mango, canned peaches, canned lychees, apricots, honeydew, sprinkle of vanilla and cointreau! lovely summer treat! thanks! made for zwt4

DH loves fruit salad and this one was superb! The vanilla brought out the flavors of the fruit without overpowering them. Against advice in the recipe, I used some strawberries, along with a perfectly ripe cantaloupe, kiwi, a beautiful mango, a banana that was too far gone and actually 'melted' into the juice and some canned apricots. We'll be making this again and again with summer's bounty. I didn't use the called-for sugar, opting for the fruit juice to add any needed sweetening. Worked perfectly!

Mmm. I love this fruit salad. I used papaya, mango, kiwi, pineapple, bananas, and mandarin oranges. Instead of sugar, I whisked a little honey in to some mango nectar and added a sprinkle of flaked coconut. It's so, so good.

I had to vary the fruits to what I had on hand so I tried grapes, strawberries, orange (with pith carefully removed), canteloupe, honey dew and fresh peach (didn't have canned). I love the vanilla in it. I've never tried vanilla in a fruit salad. Also for a small kick of iron and calcium I used molasses as my sweetener instead of sugar (and to qualify for the ZWT4 African dessert challenge). I really wish I could have found some passion fruit (granadilla) because I love it and I know it would have been great in it. I used some of the juice from the orange scraps to add a little liquid to the mixture since I didn't have any canned juices.

Thank you for sharing your fruit salad recipe. I used papaya, mango, canned peaches, watermelon, red grapes and white grapes. I loved the vanilla added to it and I added a little bit of honey in place of the honey since some of my fruit wasn't really sweet enough. Reviewed for ZWT4 Dessert Challenge.

Beautiful — thank you Zurie for sharing your South African fruit salad secrets. I love the "rule of six" and chose papaya, pineapple, cherries, lychees, peaches, bananas and kiwi. I mixed Goya passion fruit pulp and the vanilla and it added a wonderful flavor to the fruit without any added sugar. Your description is very inspiring and there's no reason to settle for an ordinary fruit salad again!

This is a lovely way to end a summer meal. I replaced the sugar with a wee bit of honey and thought the addition of vanilla was nice. I used a banana, a mango, honeydew, papaya, cherries, and kiwi. Made for ZWT4.
