Whether you are in no money times, or not, this is a SUPER MEAL TO HAVE! My hubby was so excited to try it, and I have to admit while cooking I ate a little here and there! LOL I did use ground turkey and put in an extra clove of garlic and 1 tsp basil. It was so good. I thank you for this wonderful meal that will come in good use at our home!

hi Kari, This recipe reminds me of some of the wonderful concoctions we put together as kids, there were 10 of us kids so we lived very frugal, the only change I made was to add a can of kidney beans,it was delicious!!! Thanks for reminding me of my childhood. Darlene Summers

this is really yummy! i used 'campanelle' pasta, rather than elbows. since i live alone, i make a big batch and then transfer it into tupperware, putting some in the refrigerator and/or freezer for lunches at work. it freezes and refrigerates well.

What more can I add? Wonderful recipe. Cheap, fast, easy, and the kids love it! I added a little chili seasoning and a can of beans. Thanks!

Good, basic, one-pot recipe for busy weeknight dinners. I must confess that this recipe is just a guide for me as I find it a bit bland the way it is. I add a few more seasonings, usually, french and spanish thyme, and Trinidad seasoning peppers. I also try to include some vegetables like sweet peppers, fresh mushrooms and frozen peas and carrots. Finally I tend to add two tbspoons sugar and first caramelize the beef with the garlic and onions. The recipe says drain the beef after cooking but I keep the juices after caramelization for added flavour. The recipe is unclear about if to keep or toss the water from the stewed tomatoes. I use only one tin of tomatoes and keep the tomato sauce. The sugar from the caramelizing process conteracts the acidity of the sauce from the stewed tomatos which I also add to the pot.

We really enjoyed this recipe! I browned the ground beef with the onion and added more garlic and quite a bit of salt and pepper. Simple and homestyle goodness in one pan. I served this with crusty rolls and a tossed salad and there wasn't a bit left! Nice on the budget, great comfort food. Thanks, Kari!

I am trying to use what is in my freezer and larder without going to the store for extras and I found a ton of ground beef. So this worked well! I used shallots and garlic (as I am out of onions), a large can of crushed tomatoes with Italian seasoning, and a smaller can of diced tomatoes. I also used whole wheat pasta and added a can of kidney beans. I served it with homemade herbed popovers. A very filling meal.

I'm with Darlene, if you think this recipe is bland, try adding a can of kidney beans to it and topping it with cheap parmesan cheese. That's what my mom always did. That, and she cooked it the day before we were going to eat it. With four kids at home, we ate this a lot!! Oh, and we always called it Slumgullion. If you check out the word origin, the word means (other than a reference to the Colorado landslide) anything yucky and disgusting made with less than fresh ingredients. Maybe that's why we let it sit a day before eating it. Funny, it was always one of my favorite meals.
