Nurse Di-- I would give this more than 5 stars if I could. Have mercy. Did not make any alterations. Adding the small amount of bacon drippings to the oil is the secret. Gave a slightly smoky flavor that we all liked. Also the cayenne was a nice addition. We really enjoyed this.

My sister and I grew up eating fried okra as kids. She and her family were visiting and I thought I would surprise her by making this. My cooking skills are limited so I wasn't sure how it would turn out, but I do remember my grandmother soaking the okra in buttermilk when she made it. It turned out perfect. The batter was golden and crisp after frying. The okra was not slimy. I don't usually save bacon grease but I did just for this recipe. It definitely adds to the flavor. Thanks Nurse Di. My sister and I are in your debt.

NurseDi, this is another one of your winners! I have made fried okra for years, living in SC it's staple. But I never tried soaking in buttermilk. AMAZING! I will add that step from now on, and coach my daughters to do the same. Thanks!

This was just scrumptious! I also used it for green tomatoes and just dipped the tomatoes into the buttermilk and then breaded. Brought back many fond memories of childhood. Will make this again next summer!!

I got a cast-iron Dutch oven as a wedding present. I have been seasoning it to get ready to cook something in. This is what I chose to cook to initiate it. This turned out even better than I had hoped. The batter fried up crisp and the okra was tender on the inside. I really like the combination of flour and corn meal in the batter. The cayenne gave it a litte kick. This was as good or better than my mom's. Thanks Nurse Di.

My husband is from the south (Mississippi) and loves southern home cooking. I am from Reno, NV and have never eaten okra, much less attempted to fried it. My husband selected this recipe and the cooking was collaborative. The result was excellent. Crunchy, slightly spicy battered okra. Tasted so good and was really very easy. My husband said that it was better than Sweetie Pie's (his grandmother). Now that is quite a compliment. Thanks!!

It doesn't get any better than this. My husband likes every food ever created, but when preparing it he's hard to please. I could not keep him out of the kitchen when he tried this okra. He kept going on about how wonderful this is, and how this is how okra should taste. Thanks, NurseDi, a fantastic recipe!

Delicious — this is the first time I ever had fried okra and was happy with the delicious result. I did subsitute Crisco for the bacon drippings and also added 1 tablespoon of baking powder because I only had regular corn meal. Even my non-vegetable eater ds liked this. Thanks for sharing!
