I made the cake only, and used a caramel frosting. Used some of my morning coffee: I use dark roast and to most people it's at least double strength, but BOY did the cake have a nice flavor. Though it was rich, moist, and delicious, I had a problem. It came out of the oven looking absolutely beautiful and then fell completely flat. My cake turned into dense, rich brownies!! From a Q&A thread, I have determined that I overbeat the batter...I did run the beater up to high for a bit. Completely my fault, but thought I'd post this as a warning to others. Keep the beaters on medium only! Thanks, Karen, for sharing your recipe!

This is a very easy recipe, and very good. I'm sure I will make it many times. Because of some reviews I did make a few changes. I used 7 oz. of coffee (no big deal), and only 1/2 cup of milk. I did detect a certain "saltiness" what with 2tsp of soda and 1tsp salt, so next time, I'll just use 1/4 tsp salt. The icing I used 13 Tbsp of butter, omitted the shortening, and kept all else the same. It came out great. Personally, I prefer it not chilled.

This cake is AMAZING! My husband kept asking for a 'regular, good, chocolate cake'. I tried a few and he wasn't impressed... but this cake he LOVED! I have made it about 5 times already - it's a huge hit with the neighbors too. I am rather new in the kitchen - this cake was so easy to make and so yummy and came out just perfect. This really is the only chocolate cake recipe I'll every need. Thanks! Lynne

It didn't taste bad (very moist and chocolaty) but WAY too "heavy". I served this at my friends 21st bday and most people only ate half a piece of the cake. Plus the frosting was way too buttery. Sorry to go against the crowd.

Great title for this cake! This is the exact recipe (except for the icing) that my Mother has been using for years....my sister and I now use it faithfully!I am fairly new to recipezaar and had planned on posting it,but you beat me to it...good thing i browsed around the top 100 recipes first!!!!Funny that you mentioned you like the cake chilled as i really like it that way too!! I think i will try your icing with it next time and i also like the raspberry idea! Pure Heaven!! The last time i made this recipe my husband happened to have Irish cream coffee brewing so i used it anyway! It turned out just as great as usual! I may try experimenting now with different flavored coffees in it! Hazelnut vanilla i bet would be AWESOME! Our recipe directions are not as detailed as your though....we just throw it all in the bowl at once and mix....comes out perfect! I may try your steps though and see if it comes out any better though i can't imagine it could get any better!!This truly is "The only chocolate cake recipe you will ever need!!!!"

This is really one of the best chocolate cake recipes that I have found. I have made it 3 times in the last month, my whole family loves it. I made a coffee frosting the first time and that was great the second time I made white boiled frosting and that was even better. I definitely will keep making this cake! It is better cold from the refrigerator, very moist and has a great flavor.

i was surprised at this recipe. BEcause this recipe is similar to #2496, but this has addt'l 1/2c more oil and more flour. I had a better time leveling off the mounded top of the cake. The cake's moist, not as so sweet. Baked mine in 2 (9" cake pan) for about 37min. I use chocolate ganache (11oz choc, 1/2c milk, 50g butter, 25g water) for the frosting.

This cake so so good! It was like a devils food cake with a creamy white icing! I thought the ingredients for the icing sounded a little strange, but I thought I'd give it a try anyways, and I was really glad I did! My husband hates icing with the "powdered sugar taste", so he was really happy with the results! I will file this recipe in my box of recipes I will bake often! Thanks for sharing!

I have made this recipe twice with great results. The second time I made 12 cupcakes and a 9"X9" cake. I would suggest using salted butter or unsalted butter with a little salt for the icing to enhance the taste a little. The cake is rich and moist and wonderful and the icing is not hard to do at all.
