I think I was probably around 7 years old the first time I made a Jello cake! I prefer mine with yellow cake mix and strawberry jello. We always made our "frosting" from a package of Vanilla pudding with Cool Whip folded in. At any rate, I had to review this because it's one of my favorite cakes. I'm not a huge fan of sweets, but this cake isn't too sweet and cloying and is so refreshing on a summer day. It's nice to see this old favorite posted here.

Karen...Great recipe....made it with strawberry jello and then after "frosting" it with the cool whip, I arranged fresh, sliced strawberries on the top!!! YUMMY!!!! It is by far our favorite for hot days, so light and refreshing!!! Thank you, Karen, for posting it!!!!

I make this cake with a few changes. #1) I dissolve the Jello in only 1 cup boiling water. (This gives a more intense flavor to the Jello and a firmer "set".) #2) After the cake has cooled, I make larger random holes throughout the cake (using the end of the handle of a wooden spoon) and I spoon the dissolved Jello into these holes, "pouring" the Jello from the spoon into each hole. #3) After the Jello has been spooned into the cake, I immediately frost the cake with Smooth & Creamy Frosting #122146 (using vanilla, chocolate, lemon or cheesecake flavored pudding depending on the flavor of the Jello used in the cake). This really is a perfect light frosting for a FANTASTIC cake!!! I then chill the cake until serving. ~ Jeff's Girl Way Out West

I made this for my Grandmothers birthday and it was a big hit. I used Cherry jello and arranged stemmed cherries around the bottom. This was a very moist cake and not difficult to make either. Thanks for posting Karen.

I made this cake for my niece's birthday. Very beautiful and colorful. I was impressed with how moist the cake was. I used strawberry jello. The Cool Whip frosting was light and not so sickeningly sweet like those buttercream frostings. Thanks for sharing this recipe. A hit with both kids and adults.

I love this recipe, my favorite Birthday cake not too sweet. I prefere to make it with the Jello just the slightest bit set when I pour it into the holes so it doesn't puddle in the bottom of the cake pan

This was great. I used a low calorie raspberry jello and served the cake on hot custard rather than with cream or topping. Was enjoyed by all!

We have been making this for years, and it is always a hit! At Christmas we make two layers, one red and one green. Garnish the top with colored sugar sprinkles.. Looks so pretty!

I made this as a birthday cake for my husband. Used a Betty Crocker French Vanilla cake, and strawberry jelly, with fresh strawberries. I used whipped cream in place of cool whip. Lots of 'mmm mmmm's' to be heard, thanks Karen!
