My DH found this on the web somewhere last year, and we were astounded. We only knew of the cider vinegar and liquid soap. There was no mention of the paper. In any case, we put the mixture in a pretty bottle and leave it on the kitchen windowsill. It's amazing. Sometimes we just stand there and watch them literally dive in.
Hey, we're retired. ![]()

Wow! Wow! WoW!!!! I had already made a batch of another trap and didn't see it turn any of the flies head so I searched some more and found this one. Seconds later I caught my first fly. Yea!!!! Now, about the paper,I simply rolled my paper into a big wide cone, taped it into place and then cut the bottom, the part closest to the solution, into a 1 inch circle. I then added tape to the sides of a little juice glass, around the rim leaving half the strip of tape above the rim, so that when you put your cone into the glass the tape will then secure the paper to glass so no flies will escape. It is catching and killing many as I am posting this now. Thank You,Beth

Update - Jan 09 - I find it easier to cover the jar with Saran Wrap and poke a few small holes in it with a wooden shisk kebab stick. The little flies still find their way in easily. Thank you - those fruit flies were making me wacky! I had a bit of trouble getting the funnel made to fit correctly but the review by BethHallKelley helped me out. Took a few hours to get them all but they seem to be gone. Thx.

So glad I found this. Fruit flies drive me crazy in the summer and this really works! I buy those cheap plastic sandwich containers and cover them with saran wrap (instead of making the paper cone) and put a rubber band around the rim to hold the saran wrap in place. I poke small holes in the top and they all go in there. I also usually add a splash of fruit juice to the mixture. Thanks!

Great way to catch fruit flies. I found they got out with the papaer cone so I put a piece of plastic wrap over a shallow bowl and poked a few holes in it with a fine skewer. In they went and didn't come out. I caught hundreds on a few days and haven't had any more since.

My daughter was having trouble with white flies on her plant on our patio. I tried this with the yellow paper to see if it would work on them too. Seems the gnats love it as you can see - there were plenty after just one hour! I'm still waiting to see if I can find any white flies in there...they are so much harder to see. Works inside the house too...had success at my sister's with this method.

May I worship you for the rest of my life? After an experiment gone extemely wrong when I was in third grade, (I'm 50 now, so you can see what a mark it left on me), I have tried everything I could come up with to try and kill off these little suckers, even as far as buying a soapstone dish that I need to buy refills for all the time, and this method is far better, and infinately cheaper. I know, I know, they aren't "dirty" like regular flies, but I despise them and their little red bodies! And now you, anon23, have saved my sanity! I am a scrapbooker and love anything paper arts, and it seems to me as long as the paper stock I use is white on the inside of the cone, it works amazingly!!!...Crying in thanks at anon's feet...Hubby was so impressed he asked me to make him one for the garage. Success again! I'll try and not be awful, but I think my intolerance for the little buzzies has caused him, after 26 years, to be as mean as I am! He's counting! We understand the retired comment by Diana #2, we feel just like that! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I thought I posted a review but it never showed up, so probably I clicked cancel instead of submit. Anyway, this is the very best solution. I ran across it this past week and then a couple of days later we had a swarm of fruit flies from two bananas. I don't know where they come from. I mixed this solution up and before I could put it where I wanted it, they were landing on the cone. In about two hours I couldn't see any more flies; they were all in the jar dead. Today, I saw a couple more and remixed the solution and set it out. There must be 25 more dead in the jar. I didn't see that many flying around, but they must have been there somewhere. Thank you anonymous23 for posting this wonderful recipe. It is amazing. My husband and I couldn't believe it. It is as good as my Ant Recipe that I posted to get rid of ants. I can't say thank you enough for this tip.

Yeppers, works like a charm. I don't know where those little annoying critters came from but I had a swarm in the kitchen. Tried just putting a bowl out but then filled an empty plastic water bowl with this mixture, put in a paper cone and could not believe the number of fruit flies we caught. A big Thank You!
