26 Reviews of Traditional Irish Soda Bread

From: ~sweet pea~

On Sep 10, 2008

Simple, fast, dense, and tasty. This bread is a new staple in my diet now. I made it entirely with whole wheat flour and vegan buttermilk (soymilk + lemon juice). I like it best the day after--the flavors really develop then.

This is EXCELLENT. I've been using another very similar recipe for Irish soda bread, which was ok. But the difference here I think is the higher temperature, 425. This bread turned out crusty/chewy/flavorful and delicious. I used 1/2 whole wheat flour, and made buttermilk from regular 1% milk with lemon juice. It's also incredibly easy to make.

My family LOVED the bread. Simple to make, has a nice rustic look, and paired beautifully with the stew I paired it with. I'm from the South, and I have to say that it reminded me in look and taste of a giant biscuit. Made me wonder if my KY ancestral mothers have been making mini Irish Soda Bread loaves all these years. Thanks for the good eats!

Just took it out of the oven. I made half of portion, and baked it 30 minutes. Tasty! Thank you for this recipe!

Exactly as stated..rustic, crusty outside, chewy inside. Similar flavor to biscuits. Excellent hot, with butter. Must have strong teeth and jaws !

Every St. Patrick's Day you'll find me picking raisins out of my piece of soda "bread," so this recipe is near and dear to my heart. It's very dense and so good with soups and stews.

This was my first time making soda bread and the ingredients made me sceptical of how it would turn out but it was delicious. Like a previous reviewer I only made half the recipe. It was dense, crusty and surprizingly flavourful.

This is a great recipe - so simple to make, and tasty as well! I made it last night for dinner, and my family really enjoyed it. I was planning on making another loaf tonight, but will have to run to the store first as we're out of milk and lemon juice (which I used for buttermilk since we didn't have any last night). Thanks for sharing this delicious recipe!
