47 Reviews of Hamburger Gravy

From: Jessica S.

On Jun 9, 2005

We always called this scrambled steak (over mashed potatoes, or bread, or rice, or whatever) and it was a staple at my high school. Loved it! Still do. My mom still makes it and (at 34) I feel like a kid again when she invites my family for dinner. Thanks for sharing.

Wowsers! I don't believe it. Two bites and I was back in 1953 at lunch in the cafeteria at Horace Mann Junior High, eating lunch and worrying about the math test I had to face fifth period. This is a real taker-backer! And it is one of the very few cafeteria recipes I actually liked. Thanks for submitting it.

I was so excited when I found this recipe! When you said that your grandmother was a cook at a high school--I thought wow my search is over.Hambuger gravy was my favorite lunch when I was in junior high school. It isn't exactly like the one the cooks in our school made, but very close.I thank you Jodi, and your grandmother for the recipe :0)

My mom made this all the time when I was growing up. It was her quick fix meal. She didn't use the soup mix, but made her own gravy. My mother-in-law always made it with golden mushroom soup. That's how I make it now. Yum! Comfort food.

This is a great basic recipe. I used ground turkey, added lots of fresh mushrooms to the sauce as well as bell pepper. I used milk instead of water/flour to thicken up the soup, and didn't need any beef bouillon. We had this over egg noodles. Quick, simple and delicious!

Simple, and good. As with most things I did throw in a bit of garlic. Nice inexpensive quick dinner, thank you.

Bring's back memories; and it does taste just like the school's lunch! I always bought lunch on this menu day..........very easy to make as well, and economical.

Quick, easy, and filling. I used about two tablespoons of onion soup mix in place of the bouillion, but still found this bland, so I added in a lot of garlic-pepper at the table. Served over Onion Mashed Potatoes #20272 (see photo).
