7 Reviews of Cucumber and Sour Creme "Miseria"

From: Marie Ford

On Dec 28, 2001

I make a similar recipe with cucumbers & sour cream. Instead of plain salt, however, I use Garlic Salt (shake heavily), and also several good shakes of paprika. This is a hit with everyone to whom I have served it.

I grew up in Poland and mizeria is one of my favorite salads. My mom made it on the sweet side though, she added a couple of teaspoons of sugar to the sour cream, as well as vinegar as previously posted by others.

When summer comes, I can hardly wait for the cucumbers so that I can make cucumbers & sour cream. I usually add a little vinegar to the cucumbers after draining them, then add the sour cream. When my Mom made this my Dad would have a whole soup bowl full - not just a spoonful for him!!

Our family made this too - we're Lithuanian, but I suspect that this is popular across a wide region. What we do different is to add either a chopped scallion or minced fresh dill to the sour cream before mixing it with the cukes. A wonderful, refreshing salad.

My Polish mom also made this simple but delicious dish only she added just a little bit of vinegar to the sour cream before mixing. This is particularly refreshing on a hot summer day.

I really could eat a whole bowl of it. I like to eat it together with mashed potatoes, the way I used to when I was a child growing up in Poland. I also add Vegeta, which is a seasoning used often in Polish cooking. Darn, I wish I had more cucumbers in the fridge

My mom used to make this recipe for my dad. Adding a little vinegar to the sour cream , as was previously stated in another review, really makes this recipe irresistable. The cucumbers are like the commercial about potato chips. Once you eat one, you can't stop. Ellen Baczek Amodeo
