I'm not Jewish, but do keep the Sabbath, so on Friday I baked this to serve guests at our sundown dinner. I made one loaf: 3 braids on the bottom, 3 braids on top of that, ending with one long rope to cover the whole loaf. Thus the loaf represents the 6 week days, with the Sabbath above all the other days, representing classic challah. Never cut challah with a knife, in honor of the text which states that knives will be pounded into ploughshares. The bread was passed, each diner tearing off the desired portion, and spreading with honey-butter. My loaf came out dark brown on the bottom--not the fault of the recipe--my oven must be too hot. Next time I'll lower the heat. This was a beautiful, light loaf of bread. Thank you Mirj. You've got a winner here!

My most succesful attempt at challah yet! I needed to let the dough rise for an additional 45 minutes (I always have to do this- I'm not sure why) and cooked it for only 25 minutes. The bread machine makes fresh challah a snap. Thanks Mirj!

My good friend HotPepperRosemaryJelly told me about this recipe and how she gets great raves every time she takes it some where. Since I needed something to bring to a party tonight I decided to make this recipe. Also this was the first time I used my ABM to make just dough plus using a recipe from this site for making bread. So I didn't know what to expect, however it was super easy and I followed the directions except I didn't add any seeds on the bread. I highly recommend this recipe and I would give it 10 STARS if I could! :D

This is the best challah bread recipe I have ever had. My bread came out wonderful and the family was overjoyed! I followed it exactly and had no problems. I love this recipe, I just backed two loaves this morning :o) Shabbot Shalom!

I enjoyed this bread. I'll admit I've never had Challah, so I have no idea what it is supposed to taste like. I used one cup of white flour and 3 1/2 cups of wheat flour. Needed a bit more flour than called for. I might use regular sugar instead of brown sugar next time. It baked up in about 25 minutes and it was tasty warm with margarine. I'm going to freeze one loaf for later.

Made this recipe by halving it in a smaller bread machine — worked like a charm. Everyone was very impressed. Definitely a keeper.

I made a few batches at a time and when I went to the freezer to defrost them for Shabbat I saw that my kids had been nibbling on them right from the freezer!! Really loght and fluffy! I subbed Splenda for the sugar and it came out great! I make it now every week - thanks again Mirj!

I tried this recipe another time after failing at it twice before. Turns out 3rd time's a charm. The difference? I put wet ingredients at the bottom (another recipe book had suggested that I should have put dry ingredients first). The first two tries I attempted, I got a dough that was so sticky and wet that it was not workable even with additional dough. Unbelievably, switching around the order got me a beautiful dough and a fabulous challah. I'm glad I kept at it.

My very first attempt at this challah was successful! I did use a bread machine (breadman pro) to do all the work, I simply let it run through the cycles til after the first rise and then I took over. I did the recipe exactly like the one posted here but instead of 1/3 cup of oil I used 1/3 cup of melted butter. It was marvelous but next time I will try the recipe with honey instead of brown sugar. I prefer my challah on the sweeter side. Otherwise, it was a complete success. I gage my recipe's as successful when I would be proud to make a gift of it to a friend!
