What a fantastic Clam Chowder recipe. I brought it to an "East Coast" dinner party after suggesting I would make a clam chowder to start with. I read at least 15 recipes from everywhere and went with this one. Well, was everybody surprised at the party after tasting this. It was the highlite of the party and our friends are still talking about this clam chowder. I used about 1-1/2 cups of chicken broth and you could not tell. Did the rest of the recipe as told. Thank you so much, this will be made a lot more for this house and other parties.

EXCELLENT! The only alterations I made to the "ingredients" part of the recipe was to add more potatoes (I had probably 4-5 medium sized potatoes), add about 2/3 c. of chopped celery and increased the roux/liquid by about two times. The other thing I did differently was make it in the crockpot. I cooked the bacon to crisp, removed it, then sauteed the onion and celery. Then I made the roux and thickened the milk & cream on the stovetop. Tossed it in the crock with the diced potatoes and onion/clery mixture, crumbled the bacon, threw everything else in (I didn't end up using the remaining reserved clam broth). DEEEEEEELISH! Served it with homemade dinner rolls...perfect for the first REALLY chilly night here in the midwest! Only one serving left and I'm SOOOO looking forward to digging into it for lunch. Thanks for sharing, I'll be making this again!

This is soooo good Dorothy. Just the way my grandmother used to make. The chowder turned out very rich and creamy. I just used a little extra clam juice to get the right consistency as we like ours a little thick. This was very heartwarming and a comfort food for me. Thanks

I think there may be an echo in here... Best clam chowder ever! ever! ever! Okay, seriously, I remember growing up in the Pacific Northwest & the best clam chowder back then was mom's after a day of digging our own clams on the beach. This was as close to that as I've been in 30 years. I used the whole can of chicken broth, 1/2 lb. of bacon & red potatoes (what I had on hand). Served it with Frank's Cheesy Garlic Bread & got rave reviews from the family. Thanks for sharing, Derf!

Derf - Thanks for a great recipe. We've made this chowder dozens of times, and someone always asks for the recipe! I generally add more bacon and clams, but otherwise, it is great for the Pacific Northwest winters. Thanks much.

This was fantastic, my company is still talking about how good it was. I substituted Chopped clams instead because I couldn't find whole baby clams.

I've used this recipe for a couple of years, but tweeked this recipe a bit though. Added 1/2 t thyme, 1/2 - 1 t red pepper flakes, a pinch or so of oregano, a few more potatoes, skimmed back just a tad on the onion (do not grate these-did this once BIG mistake), use whatever milk I've got on hand and at the end 1 short can of shoepeg corn. Anyway, I've dazzled many with this recipe; it's on permanent file in my cookbook. Thanks for a great recipe.

This chowder is absolutely perfect!! I made it in my crockpot for dinner Halloween night and it makes for a very comforting bowl of chowder. The recipe was very simple but the flavors where fantastic. Serviced with a side salad & crust bread. Thanks Dorothy!

Wonderful chowder. This was my first attempt at clam chowder. Creamy, smokey and great. The bacon was a great addition. I did not have Half and Half so I subbed whipping cream. I can't wait to make again. Thanks for posting. 1-18-09 Made the chowder for the second time. I messed up and only bought 18oz of clams. I added about 6oz of canned smoked salmon. It turned out wonderful

Scrumptious! Both the kiddies wanted seconds...then thirds! My husband is the clam chowder buff in the house and said it was great. I had bacon drippings but no bacon and it worked well. Instead of plain salt I used celery salt, and I might add some chopped celery in with the onions next time too. Definitely a keeper!
