Houston's lied to you, Chef #226412---They do use chopped beets. I used to make the veggie burgers when I worked prep there. Brown rice, oat cereal, chopped black beans, salt, pepper, fresh garlic, jalapenos, white onion. The glaze is honey, soy, hoisin, and molasses. it gets dipped before grilling and held in the marinade before cooking.

The flavor is phenomenal! Exactly like Houston's. I would have given 5 stars but the burgers didn't hold together well. Maybe I did something wrong? I will definitely make these again and often and will revise my rating to 5 stars if the burgers hold together next time.

I had been looking forward to trying this recipe after a friend told me about it. I really liked it! I did a few things differently... I wanted to make them vegan, so I substituted the egg white for 1 tablespoon white rice flour and 1 tablespoon of cornstarch. Also, substituted the bbq sauce with hoisin sauce. I sauteed the beets and onions, with some fresh garlic, before mixing them into the bean mixture. I then chilled the mixture for a few hours before forming the patties, and baked them on 350 for 25 minutes. After they cooled, then I grilled as described in the recipe. I served them on a whole wheat bun grilled in coconut oil, and topped the patty with sauteed onion slices and vegan Monterrey Jack. YUM!!! Next time I will need more binder, as they held well together, but were rather soft to bite into. My friend mentioned that the original posted recipe required quite a bit more egg white to hold together. Great recipe. I will def make these again. THANKS!!!

These would not hold their form and fell apart in the pan right away. I added more oat bran, but still fell apart. The taste was pretty good, but the patty needs more structure.

I love this recipe. I also had to modify it. I added an extra egg and then equal amounts of bread crumbs & oat bran until they held together a little better. Once I formed patties I refrigerated them until I was ready to cook them.

Houston's may use different things at different locations because the one I eat at roasts their own beets and uses them for the garden burgers. So it's ROASTED BEETS instead of canned. I LOVE their garden burgers!

I haven't tried this yet, however when I quizzed a houston's waiter once, I was told "prunes" was one of the ingredients.

This may be IT. I've been trying to "reverse engineer" this burer for some time. Two amall differences however, our local Houstons in SOCAL uses small black beans instead of pintos and a small amount of something red like maybe shredded cooked beets to give the burger a rare meat look. The proportions and measurements are kinda weird, and I agree that it needs experimentation. Please report on your results and I will too. thanks rich vinet, irvine, CA

I have tried a similar recipe and asked Houston's. They do use small black beans, beet juice only-no chopped beets (though that is a nice addition),sweet soy sauce, oat bran, and mushrooms. If you look at Bandera's recipe they use sweet potatoes too. I tried it and its good.I don't think they use egg white-according to Peta's website this burger is vegan. I'm experimenting again tonight. I'll let you know how it comes out.
