35 Reviews of Senegalese Chicken and Peanut Soup

From: *Shelly*

On Jan 26, 2005

This is an outstanding soup. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars. It is wonderfully unique and definitely hearty enough to make a meal out of it. Mean's intro description is right on — there is a peanut flavor to the soup but it doesn't dominate and the soup is a bit spicy but not overly so. Absolutely delicious. The different types of curry make for fabulous layers of flavor. I've never experienced a soup like this before and now it is my favorite.

Served this to my sister and BIL--they were crazy for it. I didn't have & couldn't get the yellow curry paste so I substituted green curry paste plus a bit of turmeric. Used light coconut milk (canned). Otherwise, followed the recipe exactly. My sister wanted to make sure I had this recorded or knew where to find it again. Superb--not surprising it's an award-winner (wondering what award?)!

I usually use mild curry powder, but the second time I made this, I had to use hot. It was awesome both times, but my family said it was much hotter the second time. This is such an easy soup, and deboning (& dicing) a store-bought chicken is a great idea. I make another chicken/peanut soup, but I'm starting to like this one better, due to the coconut milk and the increased peanut butter. And my coworkers LOVE it, I gave 'em samples today, and they all insisted I provide the recipe. Fabulous recipe!!!

So glad I tried this, it is a wonderful soup.I could not find the curry paste but next time I make this I will be sure to scour all the stores till I can find it.Followed the directions/ingredients otherwise, and was pleasantly suprised at how simple this was to make. The flavors seem to meld more smoothly the longer the soup sits, and it is even better the next day.My taste buds have been broadened after eating this soup.Very good!!

Okay,I am a little behind in reviewing (due to my lurking habit). Anyway, this is the best soup I have ever tasted, and I am a soup conosseuir! I love the peanut flavor without the peanut butter flavor. The overall flavor is rich and substantial without any one ingredient assaulting your taste buds. I don't know if Iwould have normally made this soup, but I have read so many wonderful and excellent reviews of Mean Chef's recipes that I had to buy the ingredients and try it. I definitely will make again, except this time I will invite guests over for dinner. Thanks for an out of the ordinary taste sensation!

This is an absolutely wonderful soup! From the flavors, to the rich colors ( I loved the soup being a warm golden pumpkin color and the brilliant green cilantro playing off of each other), and the various textures, they all add up to a winner. And despite the fact that it sounds so exotic and perhaps tedious, it is none of those. It goes together beautifully with right down to the minute instructions. A sure fire repeat at this house. I can see why it is award winning. I snuck a few bowls out of the pot immediately to save for the freezer, I am glad I did....I think we could have eaten the whole pot!

My favorite soup!! I found it really easy to make and served a lot of people. We didn't have an onion, canned tomatoes, or coconut milk, so we skipped the onion, used tomato paste and plain milk, and it turned out absolutely wonderful! The overlapping flavors of tangy tomato, zingy cilantro, and earthy peanut are THE BEST!

Absolutely Fabulous. I had a dinner party where some were vegetarians. I substituted in vegetable stock and broiled and chopped the chicken on the side. Served the soup with with chicken optional. Still turned out great and highly recommended. Even the vegetarians raved about it.

This is a very tasty, flavorful, rich soup. My family just loved it and I served it with a fresh-baked baguette as I normally do when I make soup. I can't wait to make it again. This is worth the effort and it's like taking a flavor vacation.

This soup is sooooo good. The first time I made it I had 2 big bowls! I like to throw in a couple handfuls of peanuts. It is also good over rice.
