  • West Coast Whitebait Patties

A traditional Kiwi delicacy, and this season rarer than hens teeth. HINT: Always helps to know a West Coaster so you can buy some fresh whitebait at a good price.

  • BBQ Hinty Minty Lamb Chops

Marinated New Zealand Lamb chops - always a hit at a Kiwi BBQ. Use your hands to eat 'em with - that's what handi towels are for.

  • Vegetarian Spinach Patties

There's gotta be something nice for the vegetarians - or for those who want a break from too much meat.

  • Grilled Steak

There's nothing like a good steak grilled on the barbie. Cut each piece in half if you want it to go further.

  • Honey Soy Sausages

Sausages are a standard kid friendly favourite. You can always leave some plain for those who don't like strong flavours. Great wrapped in bread & with a bit of Watties Tomato Sauce.

Kids love chicken skewers - but then so do the grown ups.

  • Lettuce Salad

Just add some chopped tomatoes, spring onions, capsicum, mushrooms or whatever you have in the fridge (my mum used to put orange slices in hers). Serve with your fave salad dressing.

  • Mint Sauce

Goes well with the lamb chops, or if you are a West Coaster, the whitebait!

  • Watties Tomato Sauce

As they say, "you'll never be a Kiwi 'till you love our Watties sauce" - stuff Heinz, this is the best stuff you can get - so good that I made my sister backpack around the world just bring me a can in England.

  • Bread & Marg (or Butter)

Normally white bread - a Kiwi tradition. What else would you wrap your snarlers/snags/sausages in?

  • My N Z Pavlova

Invented in New Zealand (or in Australia, depending on what side of the ditch you are from - but we all know it was New Zealand - wink!) and a real Kiwi favourite - no-one makes a pav like Nana does!

  • Beer

Anything from Kiwi standards (Canterbury Draught, Speights, DB, Tui etc), to "boutique beers" (Monteiths, Macs, Matsons) to craft beers (home brew, Limburg) to foreign classics (Chimay, Leffe, Fraoch), there'll be somthing thrown in the ice bucket for everyone. Don't put yours in the bottom - you'll freeze your arm off trying to find it!

  • Wine

Every girl brings her fave - bubbly (Lindauer on special for those on a budget, or maybe something a bit flashier like Deutz), a crisp Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough, maybe a delicious aromatic wine (Pegasus Bay Riesling anyone, or maybe just a spicy Pinot Gris like Grove Mill), or perhaps a racy red number to spice it up (gulp, dare I say it, Aussies do best here if you're on a budget). Doesn't matter, there'll be enough left over for those who only want one glass.

  • Non-Alcoholic

Fizzy drinks or juice for the kids (or sober drivers) are always a hit.
