Growing up, my mom didn't keep any junk food in the house so if I wanted something sweet I had to find a way to make it (or go to a friend's house)! I loved looking through my mom's recipe books and trying to find recipes that we had all of the ingredients for. I used to make a lot of cinnamon and sugar yeast bread from Betty Crocker's Big Red Book, and for every holiday, my mom and I would make pies together from scratch. I didn't actually get interested in cooking main courses until I got married and realized that I had to actually put dinner on the table every night. Just as I was starting to get the hang of it, I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease (no wheat, rye or barley). This meant that I had to learn a whole new way of cooking. Thank goodness for Bette Hageman and her pie crust recipe. I think I would have really lost it if I couldn't make a pie! I am still learning, but I have accepted this as a new challenge. There is nothing like the feeling I get when I have success with a new recipe!
My favorite thing to bake is any sort of pie (cherry, apple, butternut squash, chocolate mousse, anything!). I feel sort of "infinite" when I make a pie because the technique has been passed down from generation to generation in my family.
For some reason people seem to really like my mashed potatoes. Probably because I am liberal with the salt and butter! My mom let me make them one year for Thanksgiving and let me decide on the ingredients. I just kept adding salt and butter and milk and more butter until I liked the taste!
My favorite restaurant is probably Carrabba's Italian Grill. They have a wonderful gluten free menu which includes my favorite dessert, ice cream!
