Born and raised in the U.S., I currently live in Mexico with my wonderful husband and our baby boy (11 May 2008). I have much to thank recipezaar and its contributors for as I have become more adept in the kitchen since stumbling across this site last year.
My husband enjoys most foods and with unlimited options, I sometimes don’t know where to start. I’m the more selective one in the house; coming off of years as a vegetarian/vegan eater, I’m just starting to explore the world of meat and poultry. I do still have issues with big industry meat production, but have found the practices here (small scale/town) to be quite humane. This has helped me into occasionally eating meat.
My husband and I met while working in one of San Francisco's popular vegan restaurants. Our dating life was centered on food; when we weren't working we were eating out (mostly Thai restaurants and Mexican taquerías). Now that we live in rural Mexico, I miss the dining out options, but it has encouraged me to recreate unavailable dishes at home.
We are currently raising pigs, horses, roosters, chickens, songbirds, six cats (Tigre, Leona, Squirrel, Mango, Stripe and Mouse), and our lovable German Shepherd Dog, Luna.
I love dessert! I'm also a big fan of the classic Mexican foods - chilies rellenos, enchiladas, chilaquiles and arroz con leche. I'm famous here for my baked goods (breads, pies, cakes) as many a Señora has told me they avoid their ovens at all costs. I do enjoy what the bakeries/sweets shops here have to offer, but I frequently miss the homemade American-style treats I grew up with (i.e. chocolate chip cookies, pumpkin pie, ice cream sandwiches, doughnuts!).
I also love simple recipes that don't use a lot of canned or pre-made products and that don't require a lot of kitchen gadgets. I would love to have a bread maker, an ice cream maker and a juicer, but while I'm living here I'm going to have to stick to the basics.
The things that come to mind as dislikes in the food department are quiche - which also carries over to any dish that has egg as a main taste. Also, aside from the occasional shrimp, I avoid seafood. My husband, on the other hand, lists seafood at the top of his favorites' list – his favorite dish being a shrimp, squid and oyster cocktail.
