Since I retired almost two years ago, I've become a huge fan of Zaar. I will never buy another cookbook again! It's so nice to have online cookbooks that include only recipes that appeal to your tastes as well as those of your family. My husband loves to be surprised with new recipes. I'm continually amazed by the twists on old stand-bys and the creativity of new ones.
I enjoy many of the comfort foods that I grew up on, many with updates. I guess they just remind me of a time when life didn't seem to be as hectic as it is today. My mother was a homemaker who planned her menus ahead for the week taking advantage of grocery store specials and always remaining within her food budget. All of us ate dinner together at the same time everyday. One day we ate a yellow vegetable, the next day green, etc. Just about every meal included potatoes in some shape or form. It may sound boring, but the routine provided me with a sense of security. Eating at a restaurant was unheard of. If my memory is correct, I was about sixteen the first time my family went to a steakhouse type restaurant. My only regret is that I didn't write down many of my mother's and mother-in-law's recipes and techniques before they passed away. Posting recipes on Zaar is a great way of safekeeping them for posterity.
