about me

I am, to be honest, somewhat intimidated by the community aspect of this site. I don't really wish to be overly involved in it. (Sorry.) I'm here because RecipeZaar allows me the chance to find a wide variety of excellent recipes, not to be social. For me, this site is a valuable resource... not a community.

I say this to explain why I might not be overly wordy in my information here, or in any reviews I might choose to post. Or why I might not choose to review much at all.

However, this is a community, so a little about me to get things kicked off. I am a computer programmer living in southern Indiana. In my spare time, I spend even more time on the computer, surfing the Web or coding Web sites. I also read, although I am not as quick at it as I used to be. I tend toward fantasy and science fiction, though lately I've taken a turn into nonfiction about ancient Greek religion.

When it comes to food, I cook because I have to. However, if I have to do it, I want it to be good. That's where RecipeZaar comes in.

Favorite Foods:

Over the past few years, my husband and I have become increasingly interested in healthy eating. I have found that I really do like all the fresh fruits and veggies, whole grains, and local and organic produce and meats. This is not to say I never like unhealthy things. Sometimes I just want to wolf down an entire one-pound bag of Twizzlers! Sometimes I just want something deep fried and coated with chocolate. But when it comes right down to it, the things that I find most satisfying in the long run are the things that are good for me.

Although I am not vegetarian myself, I do find that I enjoy a lot of vegetarian food. The more I try, the more I like, in fact. I do not see myself becoming entirely vegetarian any time soon, but if I had to I don't think I would miss the meat much.

Speaking of vegetarian foods, one of my food pet peeves at the moment is veggie food that tries to pass itself off as meat. Don't tell me I won't be able to tell your veggie burger from beef! If I wanted beef I'd eat beef--I want my veggie burgers to taste like veggie burgers. I do understand some of the reasons why people would want veggie food to taste like meat... But it strikes me as doing both the food and the diner a disservice to force veggie food to be evaluated on the scale of how well it fakes being meat. If people would accept that their veggie food was not going to taste like meat and give it a chance to stand on its own merits, perhaps there would be less talk of veggie food tasting bad.

My favorite restaurants are local places. Chow Bar is excellent for Asian fare. Snow Lion has the best salad dressing ever (and very good main dishes as well). Runcible Spoon has the best breakfast in town. I like to grab Laughing Planet's naked burritos for lunch when I can. The Irish Lion makes a mean fish and chips. And Trojan Horse for Greek food, all the way.
