Photo: That's me at the Pantheon in Paris, feeling quite small.
Suburban Detroiter, born and raised. Married, no kids, three dogs. I work full time as a Health Unit Coordinator. I am also a student, hoping to be accepted to a nursing program within the next year or so. My husband likes to do triathlons, and is currently training for Ironman Wisconsin 2010. I like to run and bike... and if I can get over my fear of sinking like a brick and drowning, I may just take up swimming and combine all three, as well. I'd like to try a triathlon or two in 2010. Currently, though, my love is running and I am training for two half marathons. I am not ultra competitive, and am not looking to set any records. I just love the feeling of accomplishment running gives me, and I love race day.
One of my favorite things in this world is simple: a scalding cup of tea with milk and honey. I guess it reminds me of my grandmother, who made me my first ever cup — so weak, it just barely had some color — when I was a little girl. We spent many, many an hour over the years sitting together and talking over cups of tea. She liked her tea "pipin' hot," and any less would not do. She believed in using the good china every day, and I now treasure her tea cups. Also, her idea of "comfort food" was hot tea and toast. I miss my grandmother terribly. For years, she was the one constant in my life, and my idea of home was wherever she was. She taught me a lot about life, and I have a lot to thank her for. She was a good friend, and I attribute my love of cooking, baking and gardening directly to her. I kneaded my first loaf of bread in her kitchen, and she supervised as I made my first pie crust (standing on a stool my grandfather made, which is now in my kitchen and used by my nephew while he helps me bake). I still make her salad dressing, with a "little bit of this, and a little bit of that," and am a compulsive dead-header of strangers petunias... all because of her.
For daily fare, I tend to eat a lot of meals consisting of vegetables, beans and rice. My comfort foods always tend to involve some sort of rice and sauce. I really love Mediterranean, Indian and African foods. I love that I can explore Recipezaar to find interesting new recipes to try out. I love fresh vegetables of all kinds, and I prefer them raw or just slightly cooked. I schmear plain avocado on toast, or eat it with poached eggs (I have pretty simple tastes). I am a shameless lover of good Greek olives and I love to snack on edamame like it's popcorn. I don't care for potato salad, egg salad, any kind of deviled meat, or peas.
I have a terrible sweet tooth, so I'd say my favorite foods are desserts. Any dessert... but especially chocolate. My husband makes wonderful creme brulee', and delights in the manly twist of using a blow torch for the yummy crust. Of course, we don't eat desserts every night, and save the creme brulee for special occasions.
One of my favorite meals to cook is breakfast — my husbands favorites are blueberry-lemon or banana pancakes. Lately, I am really enjoying baking our bread. There is just something so satisfying and therapeutic in the process.
