My family and I live in the dustiest city in the US. The bad thing about that is that I'm allergic to dust. DOH! I'm originally from a tiny town in southern Louisiana called Erath. My mother inherited the farmhouse that my great-great-great-grandfather built in 1852. Amazingly enough it's still standing. How this house has survived Andrew, Rita, and Katrina is beyond me. My parents moved me to Austin (Round Rock) Texas when I was in elementary school and I lived there until I graduated from high school. I then moved back to Louisiana to attend college (LSU) and BAM found myself in Arizona before I knew it! Southern US "comfort foods", Cajun cooking, Chinese cooking, Mexican cooking, Italian Cooking, one dish meals and more recently some desserts. I've never really had much of a sweet tooth, but recently I've been wanting/craving more sweets. DH and I are starting to experiment a little more in the veggie department because both of us were very picky eaters when we were younger and we're trying to expand our horizons.
My love of cooking comes from my mother's side of the family. My favorite childhood memories are of my Grandma's kitchen. Whether it was chicken & sausage gumbo, her famous cheesy spaghetti, crawfish etouffe or simply her rice & gravy, I always ate the most that could physically fit into my stomach. Then half ready to fall over from stuffing myself stupid, I would stumble out to the porch swing. Ah, the memories!
I hope to be able to carry on this tradition with my family now. My son loves to be in the kitchen when I'm cooking. He's still young, but I try to find things for him to do that are helpful and full of fun for him. My daughter made her entrance into this world at the end of October 2007. So now I will have two little ones to share my love of food with. The holidays are my favorite times of the year because we can cook a big meal with lots of dishes that everyone enjoys. I love being surrounded by family.
