about me

I was raised by my grandparents in the Northern Woods of Minnesota during the last stages of the Old Ways being surplanted by TV dinners and Drive-thru's. We had no electricity until the 1960's, so she made all her meals in her huge farm kitchen by hand, and on a wonderous wood-burning stove. Before marriage, she was the head pastry chef for a Duluth inn, making 60 pies per day from Monday through Thursday and 120 pies per day for Friday through Sunday. She gave me the encouragement and passion to make every meal special. I love YOU, Grandma Lyna!

October 29, 2009: Thank YOU, to my Kitchen Angel, the anonymous Zaar Member who gifted me with a Premium Membership! I don't know who you are, by your choice, but your gift of kindness took the breath right out of me when I received the notification. I am a "giver" and as such, am not used to "receiving" from most people. Whatever I did to receive this gift, however I inspired you or amused you, I thank you from the bottom of my heart! Random acts of kindness have the power to change the world and you certainly did that, for me. I'm a firm believer in "Paying it Forward" and try to put that philosophy into effect each and every day. So, to whoever you are, for the next 365 days, I will be thinking of YOU when I'm at Zaar! And, for the rest of my life, I will be thinking of YOU and how someone gave me a gift that represents my deepest passion: cooking!

I am obsessed with root vegetables: parsnips, carrots, turnips, Jerusalem artichokes, potatoes...if it comes from the Earth, I love it!

I'm also a Master at Pies, courtesy of my Grandma and a wicked soup creator.

Aside from gardening and birding, cooking is my favourite thing to do!
