I was a medic in the Rangers - food was fuel, never something we consumed for pleasure.
I traveled all over the world, tried all sorts of cuisines and took notes or begged cooks for recipes whenever I could manage it.
Now that my time in the Army is over, I spend a lot of time in the kitchen making up for lost time.
My specialty dishes are grilled or smoked beef, pork, chicken, lamb, goat, etc, and generally recipes from the American Southern states - but I do love Mediterranean dishes, and living in Greece, I have great teachers.
I travel throughout Europe and Israel, and I still take notes or beg for recipes wherever I go...
Maybe, at some point, I'll post some of the "recipes" common to Ranger units in the field - just so you can see why great recipes are such a treasure. By the way, I really don't suggest wasting your time trying any of the recipes! You can google "Ranger pudding" for a sneak peek if you're curious. I suggest this link, http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1412605/posts it illustrates the concept pretty well.
