My mother was Russian, my father of German descent, and our family is from the hills of north-central Pennsylvania. My mother started cooking at the age of 8. I believe firmly in using the best ingredients available, cooking only from scratch and using fresh fruits/vegetables, when possible. Simple home-cooking is my preference. My hobbies include cat-sniffing.
Of course I love traditional Russian foods such as pierogi, halupki (stuffed cabbage rolls), schi (cabbage soup), etc. Pork dishes are also among my favorites. I'm fond of what my mother used to call "Depression cooking"--cheap, simple yet satisfying. I'm the family baker; I seem to do that the best--that and quiche, which is so simple I'm amazed that people find it intimidating. My sister specializes in main dishes, so when we're together we whip up some pretty good meals!
