cape gooseberry

Although this berry grows wild in parts of the US, it's generally cultivated in tropical areas such as Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India and China. The cape gooseberry looks somewhat like a Chinese lantern. The bittersweet, juicy berries that hide inside the husk are opaque and golden in color and look a bit like a yellow cherry.

plural: cape gooseberries

Ingredient

Season: March - July

How to select: Look for a bright golden color. Green berries are not ripe.

How to prepare: Peel back the parchmentlike husk and rinse.

Matches well with: meats and savory foods

Substitutions: tomatillos or cherry tomatoes
