Hawaiian Calzone

Recipe #378246 | 45 min | 15 min prep | add private note

This makes a really nice change from pizza. The classic ham and pineapple combination works beautifully here.

SERVES 4 , 4 calzones (change servings and units)

Ingredients

  • 1 (10 ounce) package dry pizza dough mix

  • 1 cup ham, cubed or sliced
  • 1 1/2 cups grated mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup pizza sauce
  • 1 1/2 cups pineapple, cubed
  • 1 egg

Directions

  1. 1
Preheat the oven to 350°F or 180°C.
  2. 2
Prepare the pizza base as directed on the packet.
  3. 3
While it rises, cut the pineapple chunks into smaller pieces if you are using canned pineapple chunks.
  4. 4
In a bowl, combine the pineapple with the ham and cheese.
  5. 5
When it has risen, divide the pizza dough into four even portions. On a floured surface, roll each piece into an 8-inch round.
  6. 6
Beat the egg and brush the edge of each base with beaten egg.
  7. 7
Spread pizza sauce over each base. Top with even portions of the filling over half of each round.
  8. 8
Fold over the dough and press the eggy edges gently to seal.
  9. 9
Crimp the edges of each calzone to thoroughly seal (I like to roll the edges as you would for a Cornish pasty).
  10. 10
Brush each calzone with beaten egg.
  11. 11
Lay the calzones carefully on a greased pan and bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes, until golden and cooked through.

This was my first time making calzones and I scaled back to 2 serves, using a basil and tomato pasta sauce, and added some prawns and made 4 small calzones which were extremely filling. Thank you Shuzbud, made for Please Review My Recipe.

I thought this recipe had a really nice flavor and tasted good. And it was quick to throw together. I had two problems though. One I tasted more pineapple then ham, and I wished that had been the other way around. And two my bread got soggy on the bottom from the pineapple juice.

What a great meal!! My daughter and son thoroughly enjoyed this treat for lunch today. Comes together very easily (I did cheat and just purchased refrigerated pizza dough and cut and rolled into the 8 inch circles. Worked perfectly and you get 3 calzones out of a standard size package. Be sure to drain & blot the pineapple well so that it does not water down the sauce! It is very tasty. So glad I tagged you for the Summer Spectacular event in the cooking tag game forum June 2009.
