What to take to Tgiving as a guest?

Hi!

We are going to my nephew's house for Thanksgiving this year. I want to bring something, but don't want to step on the toes of the chef. I know there won't be much oven of stove space.

I'm thinking something in a crockpot would be good. My initial thought is a butternut squash soup.

Any other ideas that would go with a traditional turkey dinner?

Did you ask the host.. maybe they would like something specific, if not other than the soup idea maybe a homade dessert or an appetizer of some sort.. lots of great ideas on this site icon_smile.gif

While I have placesettings of my china for 15, I don't have many nice soup bowls and spoons. They may not either, so I might not do a soup.
I would lean towards a dessert.

I would like the soup because it is something I normally don't make. One year a relative brought me soup and I really appreciated it! I wouldn't bring dessert since most hosts would already have it planned- that's the fun part! I also think beverages would be helpful, wine and sparkling cider. Also, if you think they wouldn't have one already, a festive centerpiece would be good. I never have time to include one! Or even candles in inexpensive holders.

I would ask so you don't tread on any toes and you compliment the meal that's planned. Hopefully no one will have any issue with either your wish to contribute nor your respect for meshing in with the menu. icon_smile.gif

I would definitely ask first or just plan on bringing a small thank you gift for the hosts- perhaps a nice bottle of wine or a gift certificate to a restaurant for some R&R after hosting a big event? I know it seems like you'd be helping, but you'd hate for it to be misconstrued as treading on someone's big event, unless that is, you feel that you are on that good of terms with the hostess!

As we get closer to the date, and life gets busier, I am beginning to think WINE is the best choice. icon_biggrin.gif

But maybe I will get more ambitious.

That butternut pear soup looks really good.

Or- if you'd rather cook something- what about a muffin or breakfast bread basket for the host/hostess's breakfast the next morning? That way- it won't alter her planned meal at all and it's a nice thank you for them doing all the work. I know I'd love it if I got a nice muffin basket! Woohoo- no cooking!

I think you are terribly close to "spot on" where you consider a wine as opposed messing up the menu.

Sorry, I didn't catch your location, and so cannot comment on the wine, but the Beverage Forum would assist you in this regard.

If I thought to bring something to the table at Thanksgiving, it might only be your American "Ambrozioa"...see "Recipe # 163698", but you might want to discuss this with the hosts, wheras the wie might be a tad more agreeable...

First I would ask if there is anything you can make rather than guessing. Maybe with the hustle and bustle of the kitchen, you can bring something ready-to-go, like pumpkin pie or cheesecake. Or something like soup where it's already made and all you need to do is heat it up via crockpot or stove top.

I would ask about bringing a drink. Wine would work, but you can also get one of those Welch's sparkling grape juice, which is fancy like wine but no worries about alcohol.
