A quick dessert to serve for family and company that is a healthy alternative to a baked pie or crisp. If you want to make it a bit "less healthy" serve topped with vanilla ice cream or whipped topping.

SERVES 4 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
Peel/core apples and cut into thick slices.
  2. 2
Toss together the apples, brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg either in a bowl or put in a zippered plastic bag and shake until coated.
  3. 3
Cook apple mixture, 2 tbls. of water and 1 tbls. of butter in a medium sized saucepan over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
  4. 4
Cook for 8-10 minutes or until apples are tender - but not mushy.
  5. 5
Serve just as is or top with vanilla ice cream or whipped topping.

Yummy! We really enjoyed these. DH couldn't quit raving about them. He loved the nutmeg in them. Served for dinner today instead of a veggie with a cranberry pork roast and mashed potatoes. DD had hers tonight over ice cream and said it tasted like apple crisp without the crisp! There are still a few left and they will be in my oatmeal tomorrow morning. I did have quite a bit of sauce (most likely from my apples - used golden delicious because my local grocery store didn't have MacIntosh in bulk) so I thickened it with a little cornstarch. Think these will make it to the table for our Thanksgiving Feast. Thanks for posting this Hokies! Made for Sweet Traditions Tag - November 2009.

Mmmm, I just had this for breakkie over some quark (like greek yoghurt) and it tasted sooooooooo good! What a warm, sweet, cinnamony delight! I used a German apple called Elstar, which is firm but sweet and it was the perfect choice for this. I really liked the combination of cinnamon and nutmeg. They added a lovely autumnal touch to the dish. Being not so much of a super sweet person, I reduced the sugar to 2 tbs and that way most of the sweetness came from the apples. Mmmm! I will certainly make this again soon! THANKS SO MUCH for sharing this recipe with us, Hokies! Made and reviewed for Sweet Traditions Tag Game November 09.

Made this for my little one, your youngest reviewer, I guess. She took a bite, made a few cute grimaces, shook herself and asked me with her eyes to see what's in the dish. After she was done with all these "professional tasting" she opened her mouth again. I like it that she can get fruit and dairy as a dessert. I liked it too, but I adjusted the cinnamon and nutmeg according to her age and served it by itself.I'll make this again.

I didn't have nutmeg, so substituted Allspice but otherwise followed the recipe. I left the lid on the pan for the first 5 minutes of cook time and didn't have any problem with evaporation. Makes a yummy sauce and I topped mine with a dollop of fat-free vanilla yogurt.
