Unstuffed Cabbage Rolls

Recipe #28560 | 1½ hours | 30 min prep | add private note

By: CRYSTALINA Haldeman

This is a wonderful old fashioned dish that I'm sure you will enjoy. My family loves stuffed cabbage rolls, but I found that it took to much time to assemble, so I came up with this.

SERVES 6 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
Chop cabbage into pieces, par-boil until almost tender.
  2. 2
    Remove, rinse with cold water.
  3. 3
    Drain well.
  4. 4
Mix all of ingredients EXCEPT tomato sauce.
  5. 5
    Grease casserole dish.
  6. 6
Place 1/2 can of tomato sauce on bottom of dish.
  7. 7
Spread half of cooked cabbage over sauce, then layer all of meat mixture over cabbage, cover meat with the rest of cabbage, pour rest of tomato sauce over cabbage.
  8. 8
Bake 325°F in covered dish for 1 hour 15 minutes.
  9. 9
Let stand for 15 minutes before serving.
  10. 10
This is the basic recipe--you can add more of whatever you like.
  11. 11
My mother says she used ground turkey instead of hamburger and she liked it just fine.
  12. 12
Try this old fashioned dish and feel the love.

This is a very easy recipe to make and it taste great. I used 1# 8oz of cabbage and steamed it instead of par-boiling. I only used 1 teaspoon of sugar and NO salt and thought it was perfect. I'll be making this again, thank you for posting. Made for Zaar Cookbook Tag 2009 game

I really liked this recipe. I did make a few changes to fit my tastes which might be helpful if you think the recipe is a little bland. I only used 1 teaspoon of sugar & I mixed in about 1 tablespoon of paprika after it was cooked. Just an FYI, this recipe needs alot of salt & pepper. I just put a few pinches & I had to salt it alot after it was cooked. I also used 1 bag of Uncle Bens boil in a bag rice & boiled it for about 5 minutes before mixing it with the meat. Everything was cooked thru.

This was a really good recipe! My family usually is not crazy about cabbage, but this recipe changed their minds! It was very tasty and it fed all five of us, and that is a very hard task to accomplish with 2 hungry boys and a husband. Thanks for the recipe, hope to hear more of them!
