The Best Southern Green Beans

Recipe #31163 | 2¼ hours | 10 min prep | add private note

By: greyghost
Jun 13, 2002

These are FANTASTIC! This recipe was revised from an old family favorite! My southern roots come through on this one! Either way the beans end up melting in your mouth and the cooked bacon adds more flavor! REALLY tasty! Good for cookouts or to compliment any meal!

SERVES 4 -6 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
Put green beans in pot- if canned add juices, if frozen add water enough to see but not cover beans- cook on medium heat.
  2. 2
Fry bacon until cooked but not too crisp- drain on paper towel.
  3. 3
Cut onion in large (thick) slices and break rings apart in to beans.
  4. 4
Crumble or rip bacon apart add to beans.
  5. 5
    Add spices to taste.
  6. 6
Let cook for a few hours on low heat.
  7. 7
If want to serve sooner- turn heat up and cook until water boils down.
  8. 8
OR can put in crockpot on low all day long and let simmer.

I will not be making these any other way from now on. They were gobbled up. I did them on the stove top and was in a hurry so used OM pre-cooked bacon. Will make the full length version next time as I am certain the flavor will be even better!

I make my greens beans this way - only way the family will eat them! I add 2 chicken bullion cubes to the beans and it adds a wonderful flavor. Great way to jazz up the greens beans!!!

I make these by saving bacon grease in the fridge and adding a little to my green beans every time I make them. I agree with another reviewer when they say if you like crisp green beans, don't expect that with this recipe. Great flavor!!
