The Best Sangria

Recipe #64855 | 2¼ hours | 2¼ hours prep | add private note

By: Kimke
Jun 17, 2003

The longer sangria sits before drinking, the more smooth and mellow it will taste. A full day is best, but if that's impossible, give it an absolute minimum of two hours to sit. Use large, heavy, juicy oranges and lemons for the best flavor. Doubling or tripling the recipe is fine, but you'll have to switch to a large punch bowl in place of the pitcher. From America's Test Kitchen

SERVES 4 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

  • 2 large oranges, washed,one orange sliced,remaining orange juiced
  • 1 large lemon, washed and sliced
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup triple sec

  • 1 (750 ml) bottle inexpensive fruity medium-bodied red wine, chilled

Directions

  1. 1
Add sliced orange and lemon and sugar to large pitcher; mash gently with wooden spoon until fruit releases some juice, but is not totally crushed, and sugar dissolves, about 1 minute.
  2. 2
Stir in orange juice, Triple Sec, and wine; refrigerate for at least 2, and up to 8, hours.
  3. 3
Before serving, add 6 to 8 ice cubes and stir briskly to distribute settled fruit and pulp; serve immediately.

This is the best recipe! Now this is what I am requested to bring to any party. I usually squeeze a lemon with the orange, and try to make it the day before I need it because the longer it sits the better! I made a quadruple batch for my housewarming party tonight!

Had the neighbors join us for a MOST quiet Fourth - fixed this with Peach Brandy (no Triple Sec available on the holiday), added some sliced peaches to the goblets. The 4 of us polished it off in short order, everyone exclaimed "What a shame!", when it was gone — but we continued with another bottle of Zin with dinner, so they were worried about Tai Chi in the morning - but we all enjoyed the summer drink on a hot, humid evening. Thanks for posting, G.W.

This was just wonderful! We had company for the weekend and ended up making two batches. I used the lemon, cherries and nectarines. We even ate all of the fruit! This is something I have always wanted to try and thanks to you I did. Anxiously awaiting the next batch.

This is the recipe I've been using for a long time now....it's a great way to use up that bottle of wine that you opened but didn't really like the flavor of. Tastes even better the next day!!
