Rachael Ray's Super Scrumptious Sloppy Joes

Recipe #82944 | 35 min | 10 min prep | add private note

This recipe is from Food Network's Rachael Ray. I like it b/c it uses tomato sauce instead of ketchup, and you can spice it up as you like. I add more onions as well as some garlic. * I like to use a little less brown sugar, as we like ours spicier rather than sweet.

Directions

  1. 1
Heat a large skillet over medium high heat.
  2. 2
Add oil and meat to the pan.
  3. 3
Spread the meat around the pan and begin to break it up.
  4. 4
Combine brown sugar and steak seasoning.
  5. 5
Add sugar and spice mixture to the skillet and combine.
  6. 6
When the meat has browned, add onion and red peppers to the skillet.
  7. 7
Reduce heat to medium and cook onions, peppers, red wine vinegar and Worcestershire sauce with meat for 5 minutes.
  8. 8
Add tomato sauce and paste to pan.
  9. 9
    Stir to combine.
  10. 10
Reduce heat to simmer and cook Sloppy Joe mixture 5 minutes longer.
  11. 11
Using a large spoon or ice cream scoop, pile sloppy meat onto toasted, buttered bun bottoms and cover with bun tops.
  12. 12
Serve with your favorite sides or sliced tomatoes seasoned with salt and pepper, dill pickles and Potato Salad.
  13. 13
We like to put a thick slice of cheddar on top of the meat in the sandwich and broil it for a few minutes to melt. YUM.

This is now my favorite sloppy joe recipe. It is not runny and has a nice chunky texture..(I chopped the red pepper and onion in a medium dice). Sloppy joes should be slightly sweet in my opinion & this fills the bill. I put some grated cheddar on top and place under the broiler for a bit. I used Famous Daves Steak & Fajita seasoning. Terrific!!!

I love this recipe with a few changes...I had used this before out of the Rachel Ray coookbook and I made the following changes: Left out bell pepper, used the whole can of tomato paste, 1 can of tomato sauce and 1 cup of water, use 3 T vinegar, onion powder, garlic powder, chili powder, salt, pepper, smokey paprika, and cumin to taste. And finally I used about 2 1/2 lbs of ground beef. Makes wonderful leftovers!!
