Re: Chef #1230701's review on April 8th, 2009, perhaps your crock pot runs excessively hot which will no doubt give you an undesirable product. I have made this recipe multiple times since discovering this and also shared it with a number of friends who have made it with INCREDIBLE results, as did I. I feel the time is very forgiving as it has cooked anywhere from 5 hours to 8 hrs. with excellent results. I have added some chopped pecans, a few packets of Splenda, a few shakes of cinnamon, and a splash of vanilla prior to cooking--wonderful. Have also tried it with craisins, Splenda, and a splash of vanilla, again, prior to cooking. The craisins kept their shape and did not disintegrate. The oats are not mushy and gooey like regular oatmeal. They even reheat well in the microwave. I don't think you will be disappointed with this recipe.

The only redeeming quality of this oatmeal is that you don't have to stand and stir. Otherwise, it's not worth making. If you really like the texture of properly cooked steel-cut oats this recipe will only disappoint you. It is mushy and flaccid, not chewy. If you put the fruit in at the beginning it disintegrates into the oatmeal. I'd much rather take the time in the morning to make proper steel-cut oats on the stovetop - or cook them the night before and warm them in the microwave. I won't ever be making this again. Yuck.

We have another way of cooking steel cut oats. Bring 3 cups water, 1/4-1/2 tsp. salt and 1 cup steel cut oats to a boil. Cover the pan and remove from heat. In the morning, put what you'll eat into a microwaveable bowl and warm it up. Serve with honey or brown sugar. I also like it cold with yogurt and fruit. You can store the leftovers in the fridge. You can also cook cracked wheat like this. Fast and easy; we've been eating it for years, thanks to a recipe from Lehi Roller Mills.

I loved this! Got up and breakfast was ready. I cut the recipe down to serve 2 and cooked it in my crockette. Right before serving, I stired in 1/4 cup of powdered milk, covered and allowed it to stand for a few minutes. I will be using this again and again.
