A wonderful dish to take to church pitch-in dinners or picnics!

SERVES 16 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs frozen hash browns
  • 1/2 cup melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion

  • 1 (8 ounce) carton sour cream

  • 1 (10 1/2 ounce) can cream of chicken soup or cream of celery soup

  • 1 (15 ounce) jar Cheez Whiz or 2 cups grated cheese
  • 2 cups crushed corn flakes
  • 1/4 cup melted butter

Directions

  1. 1
    Defrost potatoes and place into a 3-quart casserole dish.
  2. 2
    Combine butter, salt, pepper, onion, soup, sour cream and cheese.

    Mix thoroughly.

    Pour over potatoes.
  5. 5
    Mix 1/4 cup melted butter with corn flakes; sprinkle over top.

    Cover and bake at 450°F for 45 minutes.

I've made this for years, but I had some leftover cheez whiz I wanted to use up so I tried this version. I had to omit the topping, no corn flakes, but just added some grated cheese to the top.

    I love this recipe. I usually split it into two casserole dishes and freeze one as it makes ALOT. Thank you!

    I had lost my recipe for "party potatoes" so was happy to see one here.I used cr of celery, but chicken is better. (vegetarian staying with us). I used grated cheese, and added a little garlic powder.
