This is a Dun Ard recipe. I do not know the original source.

SERVES 24 , 2 loaves (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
    Preheat oven to 375°F.
  2. 2
    Combine ingredients.
  3. 3
    Bake 30-45 minutes.
  4. 4
    Makes 2 loaves.
  5. 5
    NOTE:.
  6. 6
The thicker the buttermilk, the drier or tougher the dough.
  7. 7
The thinner the buttermilk, the softer or stickier the dough.
  8. 8
The drier dough, tough dough works better because it holds its shape better, cuts easier and seems to cook faster.
  9. 9
The softer dough tends to want to flatten out, it's hard to cut, takes longer to knead, you have to add a little more flour to make it tougher. It also takes longer to bake.

This is the real deal, not one of those faux "soda bread" recipes with additional ingredients. (They might be tasty but they are not real soda bread.) Let the bread cool and rest a few hours if you want the slices to hold together. I never can though. It's too good warm! Thanks for posting this authentic recipe.
