Slow Cooker Split Pea Soup

This split pea soup is almost as easy as opening a can, and twice as yummy. Hope you enjoy it!

SERVES 8 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

7 cups water
1 (16 ounce) package dried split peas, rinsed and sorted (2 1/4 Cups)
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
3 medium carrots, cut into 1/4 inch slices (1 1/2 Cups)
2 stalks celery, finely chopped (1 Cup)
1 medium onion, chopped (1/2 cup)
1 ham bone or 2 lbs ham shanks or smoked pork hocks

Directions

Mix all ingredients except ham in 5 qt slow cooker, then add ham.

Cover and cook on low heat 8 to 10 hrs or on high heat 6 to 7 hours until peas are tender Remove ham from cooker; place on cutting board.

Pull meat from bones, using 2 forks; discard bones and skin.

Stir ham into soup.

Stir well before serving.

I've made this several times now and for some reason forgot to rate it. This is the best recipe for split pea soup that I have ever used. I love the slow cooker method, especially in hot weather. We eat a lot of soup year round and this is my go to recipe. The only thing I add is garlic and a bay leaf. I have used both meaty ham bone and smoked ham hocks. Both turn out great. Thanks so much for sharing your recipe.

This is SUPERB! I grew up loving Campbell's split pea soup, and this is even better. I used exactly the ingredients listed, and it turned out well. The smoked ham is delicious in this soup. I did think the cook time is a little off. Mine was ready to eat at 4 hours on high. Also wouldn't hurt to add 2 or 3 cups more water; it cools to a thick mass.

I will never make pea soup another way. This was easy and measurements were accurate for me. I used smoked ham hocks for flavor, taking them out an hour or so before the soup was done and threw in 1-2 cups of diced ham.I froze this soup in one cup servings. After thawing, it tastes just like the day I made it!

This recipe is extremely easy to put together and tastes wonderful. I found I had to drain a bit of liquid but then I did have a large ham bone with meat. I think next time I will put in 6 cups of water.
