Ingredients
- 7 cups water
- 1 (16 ounce) package dried split peas, rinsed and sorted (2 1/4 Cups)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
- 3 medium carrots, cut into 1/4 inch slices (1 1/2 Cups)
- 2 stalks celery, finely chopped (1 Cup)
- 1 medium onion, chopped (1/2 cup)
- 1 ham bone or 2 lbs ham shanks or smoked pork hocks
Directions

Mix all ingredients except ham in 5 qt slow cooker, then add ham.2
Cover and cook on low heat 8 to 10 hrs or on high heat 6 to 7 hours until peas are tender Remove ham from cooker; place on cutting board.3
Pull meat from bones, using 2 forks; discard bones and skin.4
Stir ham into soup.5
Stir well before serving.

This is SUPERB! I grew up loving Campbell's split pea soup, and this is even better. I used exactly the ingredients listed, and it turned out well. The smoked ham is delicious in this soup. I did think the cook time is a little off. Mine was ready to eat at 4 hours on high. Also wouldn't hurt to add 2 or 3 cups more water; it cools to a thick mass.

This tastes just like Chunky Split Pea Soup! We used a smoked hock and then discarded it after the soup was cooked. We halved the recipe b/c I didn't have a lot of split peas and it came out perfectly. Served with buttermilk biscuits made this morning. Thanks!

I will never make pea soup another way. This was easy and measurements were accurate for me. I used smoked ham hocks for flavor, taking them out an hour or so before the soup was done and threw in 1-2 cups of diced ham.I froze this soup in one cup servings. After thawing, it tastes just like the day I made it!

This recipe is extremely easy to put together and tastes wonderful. I found I had to drain a bit of liquid but then I did have a large ham bone with meat. I think next time I will put in 6 cups of water.
